I’ve noticed Marlee grooming herself a lot today and when she does it, she makes this kinda loud noise. The only way I can describe it is like a honk with a squeaky end and she makes it the entire time she is grooming herself. Anyone else ever hear this? Is it okay? I do need to catch her again to groom her..it’s been a while but I really hate stressing her out like that.

Also, could I just use a regular hair brush on her? She is shedding so much and her small slicker brush gets really full before I can even brush 1/4 of her. Any other ideas on how to get all the shedding fur off quickly? I tried those hair mits from Petco but they only made her like a little static ball of fluff…haha.

Monkey makes noises at my hubby all the time… usually when she is displeased. Definitely get her brushed… Monkey was very irritable when she was shedding, but got much easier to deal with after I groomed most of the shed fur off her. They are much happier when its gone

I use a slicker brush plus a funky cat brush I got froma pet store called a Zoom Groom.. it works great. http://www.amazon.com/Kong-Zoom-Groom-For-Cats/dp/B00009ZJ0Q

Make sure if you try one to get the cat one, the dog one is too stiff. My local rescue, the Rabbit Advocates, uses the Zoom Grooms for their outreach nail trim/grooming thing they do each month. Highly reccommend it.

My bunny Bailey used to do that. She would also do that when she would eat something she really really liked. I’m not really sure why she did it. I wonder if some bunnies do it because they have some strange thing in their nose — like how people can have deviated septums – and so if a bunny could have something like that I wonder if those little noises would be made when they are excited about something or have to do something that may make them breath harder like stretching and scrunching up and/or contorting to groom. Just a complete guess here.

As long as your bunny does not seem like she’s in pain when she’s making this noise, then it may be just a quirk, but next time you are at the vet, I would just mention it.

I am a fan of the combs from Hairbuster (the one with the red rubber in the comb teeth). We also have used the furminator but, like other members have discovered, the furminator can take off too much hair, so you need to be careful.

I like the Hairbuster comb, along with the small cat brushes. If you have a second one, then once the first fills up you can just use the second and keep going until you need to clean them both.

But you can also wet your hands and rub her down. The fur will stick to your hands. Getting it off your hands is another story…

charlie makes honk noises sometimes when he is eating something really good and sometimes when he cleans his fur. he also did have some resp problems so im not sure if that contributed to the noises or not. i dont hear him do it very often.

on a side note though, which hair buster comb do i get? one for cats? i have been looking all over for a good comb or brush. right now i use a curry brush. its a rubber oval shape and its used for horses. it works pretty good but i would love the hairbuster comb.

I am pretty sure I ordered mine from this website.

Also, many bunnies are surprisingly vocal. You expect silence, but Spockie honked a lot when he ran circles around my legs. He loved me, and said so.

Marlee makes a quieter version of the noise when she eats greens really fast. The loudness kind of worried me and lately I’m always worried about her getting backed up from hair, it just seems to be non-stop getting longer and like I said, it is very hard for me to catch her and groom her without giving her a heart attack. Thanks for those links, I’ll definately have to look into that.

BB, this is the same noise I’ve been hearing Mimzy make while he’s grooming, usually as he goes down his stomach. I always thought it was because of the effort he seemed to need to make while bending in half, but if Bailey did it too (a lop thing, maybe?) it might not have anything to do with his stuffy nose and bum tooth, like I’ve been thinking it was.
I’d describe it as a squeaky noise too. Like someone trying to blow their overly stuffed up nose with a piece of wax paper or cling wrap or something.

I’ve had quite a few bunnies that have ranged in their vocal abilities.  My newest addition is Monster who  is probably most vocal makes that honking/grunting noise when he grooms or when he is picked up.  Because he was in a shelter i was worried he was sick or something.  Got a vet visit and he was just fine!  The vet listened to his lungs, did a blood test for anything and we were told not to worry.  If it is the same noise that Monster makes, I wouldn’t worry.  But to be better safe then sorry I’d take your bun to a vet, just in case!  It’s actually a kinda cute little honking noise though!  Like he’s working so hard to get the kisses off him!

Mimz, I thought it might have been from the way she was bending too. I managed to grab her quick this morning and brush her out a little so hopefully that will help. She seems to have a lot of hair for a lionhead…and hates me trying to do anything to it.

Nix makes the honking noises if I reach in her cage and try to move her stuff, her’s are really cute too. Actually everything she does is really cute!

I don’t know why, but I just always feel like Marlee is so much more fragile than Nixie. Nix I can just pick right up do anything I want and she doesn’t really do anything back. The lady that works downtown in the petshop by the boutique I occasionally work at says she thinks of Marlee the same way, she believes its because she’s got huge eyes that just always looked freaked out.. ha.

I woke up in the middle of the night to get some water and noticed my bunny was making a honking/sqeaking noise while grooming her self! is this normal? … lol sometimes i get worried because my bunny sleeps on her side (looks like she’s dead).

Yes, I think it’s normal. At least it was for Icey.

Icey would honk quiet a bit, most of her life. And it was mostly random, when she would be all stretched out and relaxing. She would just start honking, kind of a cross between a big goose and a pig. When I first heard it, I thought something was dreadfully wrong. Went to see what was wrong and pet her and she stopped. Since that first time she has done it all her life. It would just repeat over and over in sync with her breathing until she stopped. I assumed she was doing it on purpose, by choice, for whatever reason.

And always loved it when she flopped on her side….so cute. Janice would always say, “Awwww, look, Icey fall down.”
