Something occured to me… Lily gets so many treats from the kitchen that sometimes she is too full to eat her pellets. Would it be possible to feed her on almost all veggies, with only a few pellets as a supplement?

P.S. Thanks to all the helpful people for answering my “Picky Eater” question. After reducing her pellets, she’ll now eat almost anything out of the kitchen.

As long as she gets hay, should be ok.. just keep lowering the amount of pellets slowly. Lots of people here have their buns on hay and veggies only.

That’s great she’s now eating the veggies!

Absolutely, you can go completely pellet free so it’s just a hay & veg diet.  I thought there was a better article on pellet free diets but cannot find it.  This one does cover it some. http://www.leithpetwerks.com/Bunfun/nonpellet.html

I’ve been doing all veggies for my sick bun and his bud and let me tell you it’s expesive HAY is a neccisity period and pellets are an after thought but if money is no issue then veggies are a fine substitute for the most part for pellets. And as others have said do not change the diet quickly

Only a few of my rabbits get pellets – the rest are hay and veggies only.

Just make sure you give a WIDE variety of vegetables.

And many people who give pellets only give about a tablespoon a day. They’re almost more like a treat than a main component of the diet. If she likes them, I’d recommend giving them still, but just a very small amount.

This is great to hear that your picky bun is less picky now!

Jack and Viv are on a greens/veggie only diet because he has had a type of bladder stone that can return, and hydration is one of  the key components of prevention.   Though I do sneak a tiny little bit of pellets to Viv about once a week.

I ditto Sarita – it’s important to get a wide variety of greens.

Here’s Jack & Viv’s Main List (sometimes I’ll add something new, or replace with something else if one or two veggies are out, but this is the main everyday list)

                    • Lettuces – romaine, curly, red, endive  (lettuces may not be full of nutrition, but still help with hydration)
                    • Dill
                    • Mint
                    • Rosemary
                    • Arugula
                    • Basil
                    • Oregeno
                    • Cilantro
                    • Celery (cut in 1/2″pieces) – another low nutrition, but high hydration
                    • Parsley    (higher in calcium, but a duiretic which helps with flushing the system)
                    • Dandelion  (higher in calcium, but a duiretic which helps with flushing the system)
                    • Carrots – He doesn’t get an equally sized portion as everything else – About 4 baby carrots
                    • Sweet Potato – About five little cubes
                    • Occasionally add – Broccoli OR Bok Choy OR Brussel Sprouts  (These can be gas causing for some bunnies)

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SWEET POTATO:  This is higher in carbs/starch and is not normally recommended, but because pellets have been removed, a small amount sweet potato and carrots will add the needed extra vitamins and carbs Jack needs while providing hydration. (This was my vets recommendations)

Both my buns are on veggie only diets and have been for at least a year. They do pretty well, but just make sure that you don’t over feed them on the sugary stuff
BB – I wish that my buns would eat scuh a variety but they pick out their favourites and ignore the rest lol.
