wild bunnies don’t need nails clipped, as they are always digging and running outside, nails being worn down by rocks and trees and all sorts of stuff not found indoors. Yes, indoor bunnies need nails trimmed.

What applies for wild bunnies usually does NOT apply for house bunnies, as they are domesticated and require care totally different than their wild counterparts.

My bunnies spend 99.9% of their time on their fleece (lined pen), running on carpet or standing in the hay filled litterbox (that they dug all the hay out of the bin beside it)- so there is NOTHING to wear their nails down.

Plus wild rabbits (Cottontails) only live about three years anyway.  Domesticated rabbits are nothing like wild cottontails, cannot interbreed with cottontails and humans have selectlvely bred all kinds of crazy traits into them.   My English Lop NEEDS his nails trimmed monthly so he does not scratch his ears when he steps on them- and I use an emery board on the clipped end to help prevent scratches.  My Mini Lops get theirs trimmed that often too- though they could go longer and not experience an issue like Griffin does.  But even trimming monthly- I get a good amount of each nail- enough to know that I don’t want to wait any longer.  I do not bother to file the ends of the Mini Lops nails as the only one likely to get scratched by sharps ends would be me when they jump on and off my lap- and they are smooth within a day or 2.

You’ve reminded me that it’s nail trimming time for Sammy this weekend.
If you don’t help them keep their nails trimmed, they can catch them on their cages or fabric and break off or bleed. It’s pretty uncomfortable, even to run around on, so it’s better to help them keep their nails a nice length.

A petstore? They are less then ten dollars usually. You can buy dog nail clippers instead, the bunny ones are generally bunny handles and cruddy clippers.

Aren’t cat nails much thinner though? I don’t think a rabbit nail would even fit in there, at least not those from their hind feet. It doesn’t seem practical to clip their nails from the front instead of from the sides either, especially with the way they curve.

My vet told me he often uses regular people clippers on bunnies front paws, especially when they are little like Monkey. he does tend to use cat cllippers on back toes tho, if they are too thick for the human clippers.

Human clippers are fine for small nails, but they can split or crack larger ones.  I use cat-clippers and so do most of my other bunny-friends

Yes I wouldn’t use human nail clippers unless I had to-and then only toenail clippers as they are bigger sized.

Yeah, human nail clippers aren’t the best… They human nail clippers are mostly flat, not round like dog or cat clippers, and I’ve found that they tend to “spread” the nail and make it split when clipping, unless the nails are really tiny. Leroy’s back nails are so thick they don’t even fit in my toenail clippers. I use the guillotine style cat nail clippers on Leroy, I like them better than the scissor style. I think the cat size clippers are the perfect size, not too big, not too small. Oh and those silly little nail clippers pet stores sell are completely useless.

These are the ones I have http://www.petco.com/product/13769/Bamboo-Care-Cat-Guillotine-Nail-Trimmer,-Styptic-and-File.aspx?cm_mmc=CSEMGooglebase-_-Cat-_-Bamboo-_-118834&mr:trackingCode=B2F1EB15-8381-DE11-B7F3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA

And a plus, the clippers come in different colors (I have pink!) at the store and come with styptic powder and a nail file
