Hello everyone! I hope everyone is doing ok!   I have a question:

What is the safe temperature range for rabbits?  Chloe is inside, or course, but she is right by my front door, which is quite drafty.  With winter coming, I just want to be safe!  Also, does cold weather excite them or something?  Because last night was the first cold night we’ve had, and it was also the very first time Chloe has ever escaped from her cage!!  She has never even ALMOST done that before, so I found it funny that the first time was the first time it got cold.  Maybe she was trying to get away from the draft?

You don’t want the bun in temps over 80, that enters the danger zone, but they are more comfortable with it much lower, maybe about 65-70? If it’s comfortable for you, it should be comfortable for them. While they do like cooler temps, drafts are not good. Especially in a cage b/c there is nowhere for them to escape from the draft. Is it possible for you to relocate the bun somewhere away from door? As an indoor rabbit, she will not develop the extra fur that is necessary to protect an outdoor rabbit from the cold.

Not sure about the cold weather exciting them? I know FOR A FACT that it DOES NOT EXCITE ME! ;o)

Actually, I’ve noticed that cooler weather does seem to energize them. Fresh air, especially.
If you can’t move the cage, maybe you can rig a protection from the draft, like a curtain hanging between the cage and the door that blocks the air.

We keep the temperature in the house between 60 and 80, and make sure that it doesn’t go over 80, and that there is no air blowing directly on the bunnies. I don’t think you want a breeze blowing on them directly, I think that what rabbitpam recommended is the best idea, you can arrange a sheet to protect your bunny from the draft because that can make them pretty sick.

Cool is easier on them then warm is. They are not efficient at cooling thier body temperatures, (like we are with sweating) and they have fur coats. I feel that if I am comfortably warm in a tshirt they are warm enough. If you are chilly and wearing sweaters-that’s probably too cool for them.
As others said-nothing over 80 for sure. I’d think 60-65 is probably ideal bunny temperature, but we keep our house a bit warmer -74.

Great timing on this. My husband and I were actually discussing this today. I said that Freya will probably be fine in normal house temperatures. He worries that we need to provide her some sort of thing to go into to stay warm. Huh? I probably looked really stupid at that point. We’re in the basement and the heat in this house is entirely stupid (the heat AND air conditioning are expected to get to the basement through floor vents so it’s cold all summer and all winter), and we do use a space heater but it shouldn’t get below about 60 at a true extreme. I think 60 is positively frigid and puts me in danger of immediate death by freezing. I imagine though that Freya will manage just fine with her pretty fur coat since it’s generally 70ish. (I still think 70 leaves me in danger of freezing.)

Bunners can not get enough of the cold front that we’ve been experiencing the last few days (It almost went below 50! lol), then again neither can I after growing up in MT and WA.

WE are expected to go back up to 80 this week, so my question is, will his body have any trouble acclimating to the quick change?   We’ll be in airconditioning, but I know sometimes people get colds, etc, when weather changes, is this the same for buns?

I’ve heard that buns are ok with temps down to 50, so as long as you’re comfortable in your house, your bun will probably be comfortable. We keep our house at 65 in the winter. It’s a bit chilly and I do need to wear a sweater, but I don’t think it’s too cold for a bun (or a cat, or dog, etc). My bun is definitely enjoying the cooler temps we’re having right now.

I was actually wondering this too. We live in MN, where winter is code for evil… We just turned the heat on this week.

All summer, Chubs has enjoyed sleeping in front of the vent, where the cool air was coming out. Since we turned the heat on (and it’s never overly warm, I can’t stand to be overheated) he is still sleeping there, even though the air is warm now. I figured he wouldn’t be if it was something that bothered him right? He is free roam and can sleep wherever he likes, so if he was too warm, he’d move right?

Since the weather has gotten alot cooler in the house I am enjoying alot more binkies and bunah fivehundreds from Beeslee! She’s been zooming around the room every morning at a high rate of speed which she never did in the summer (to hot)! Of course me I’m in my fleece trying to keep warm LOL!

I keep my temp at 67-69 in the house during the fall and winter but with my drafty windows it’s probably alot lower. I do have a couple of fleece blankets for her in her cage and I do notice that she moves them around. Plus she seems to have gotten fluffier lately. My Maine Coon looks fluffier also. They must be getting their winter fur in since my temps in the house are so low.

I know I read someplace that bunnies are comfortable between 50 and 75 degrees – but, heck if I can remember where.
We keep our house between 60 & 68 during the winter. I wear a sweater!
Kay & Winston run around and play a lot more in the winter. They have fleece blankets they can snuggle on if they want – they almost always push them aside. I figure they are comfortable with the temp.

When I got to the part where it says “winter is code for evil” I literally laughed out loud. Good one!

GREAT QUESTION.  I BOUGHT A STROLLER FOR MY BUNNIES AND ITS WINTER.  WHAT TEMPERATURE CAN THEY WITHSTAND OUTSIDE IN THE COLD?
