So I just had to ask…does anyone else ever have this urge??

I went to the pet store today to stock up on hay and get some alphalpha hay for Comet (after his neuter) . Now this is the pet store in town that breeds bunnies. I know they have pretty high standards of care for them there, as I know a couple of the small animal employees personally. Still, they breed and I’m never really for that when there is so many rescue bunnies in need! Anyways, I still can’t help but go there and see all the new babies every few weeks! They are just addicting.

Anyways, there is a little dutch girl (well I guess I technically don’t know that..but I think of her as a girl- haha), and she has been there for a long time and is obviously getting bigger. There are also two little lion heads that have been there a while. Well today I went and the three of them were on clearance! “These two pens only, 6 months old- $9.99” instead of the $40 they normally are. I so badly wanted to bring all 3 of them home….first 6 months of their lives in a pet store no matter how well they care for them, that’s sad don’t ya think? I just wanted to stand there and be a spokesperson for them for anyone who came in. “I visit these guys regularly and they are sweeties! Old enough to get speutered right away! Take one home today!” *Sigh*

          — raises hand—– yep. and it was a dutch too. We’d had our first bunny Pringles for a couple of months. I had been going into Petco to buy hay and they were selling cute babies right and left, but this dutch was always there and getting bigger and bigger.

After 3 months we’d decided to go to Dallas and find a friend for Pringles and then I went into the store and there was a big sign over the dutches cage “Easter Clearance, must go! 60% off. ” and it just broke my heart. He was hunched over in the corner all by himself. They said they had him in with the babies until he started grooming them so hard they were going bald so they put him in a small pen by himself.

I asked what would happen to him and they said they didn’t really know, they just “got rid” of unsalables somehow. So I walked out with him (they swore it was a girl) and named him/her Daisy.

He instantly bonded with Pringles, but when I fostered Toby for the local shelter, the huzzy Pringles dumped poor Daisy for Toby. Daisy pined so I took him dating to Dallas and we came home with the lovely Lola and they are inseparable.

and THAT’s how you can have all your pets neutered and spayed and they STILL multiply! 😉 not that I’m complaining..

Oh Jenna, I hope you’re some distance from me or I’m going to have to rush in there and grab those poor babies! >.<
Silly girl…what a question! ^_^ There isn’t member here who’s walked into a pet store, rescue, shelter or county fair and not wanted to take all the ‘unwanteds’ home with them!

Oh I know it…dumb question. I just wish I had the funds and space for 3rd, 4th, 5th bunnies!! Then I could take all 3! Ugh, the worst part is knowing that this happens and that even if I could bring them all home…there would always be more!

Poor things.. and to think i have an unused room that could house em right now… *pokes hubby* .. *pokes harder*

I’m seriously considering starting my own rescue once we buy a house after immigration is finished. So many bunnies out there, so few good homes… and me with all the time in the world!

*kidnaps hubby’s credit card* MWAHAHA he can’t stop me now!

We paid $10 for Freya. We had recently seen Marley & Me and kept calling her our clearance bunny. Maybe that’s why she acts like she does.

It’s sooo tempting-that’s why they sell them. It’s very very hard to pass them by.

I only shop in pet stores that don’t sell animals-but I always go into the petstores that do. I tell myself it’s to ensure they are getting good care, but it’s also to endulge in seeing some really cute baby animals (that probably shouldn’t have been bred in the first place)_absolute torture-of the self inflicted kind.

Yes, yes it is self-inflicted torture…as I said, I visit frequently to see who’s been sold and see the new babies (that of course shouldn’t be being bred, even if it is a pretty responsible pet store…). I go to the other store too, and they actually cooperate with the rabbit rescue and only have one bunny there from it. Then they have a book with all the other rescue buns that are at other Pet Co’s and at foster homes around the state. That’s a pretty neat system they have going now- since they realized they were part of the problem and stopped breeding. I was thinking…this year will be my first Easter of being a bunaholic…oh no. Clearance bunnies and people who should never buy bunnies…bad combo for a sucker like me! (Or all of us!)

But remember the saying, “Saving one animal may not change the world, but it will change the world for that one animal.”

This is a predicament… There will always be another “clearance bunny” as long as people are willing to purchase from petstores. I know it is hard to see. I would try to speak with the petstore and if they are going to breed, encourage them to at least get homes for all the existing rabbits before breeding again.
