My Hunny Bunny is two years old and is spayed. She is a very gentle rabbit, good with the 7 kitties that I have and great with kids. The kitties are kind of ignoring her now that she is so big and I can tell that she feels sad that when she introduces a game to play, they go away from her. I am thinking of getting a baby Netherland dwarf male. The thing is, once I buy him there is no giving back if they do not bond. I can’t imagine her rejecting him but anything is possible. I know that if I get a baby, my big Manx kitty will want to mother him just like she mothered Hunny when she was little. When Hunny goes up to her and want to lay by her and be groomed again by her, my manx kitties goes away like “you’re too big for that kind of stuff”. Poor Hunny! So am her only playmate and I am pay her lots of attention which can also be bad if I get another rabbit and she gets jealous. Do you think I should take the chance or just keep things are they are?

Actually, I read somewhere that adult bunnies prefer adult company and not a baby. So the baby would be for your benefit and not for her.

It’s a shame that the kitties are not interested in interacting with her, she sounds really social. Well, I can only say that getting a second bunny was such a good thing – for us at least. There was never an issue with the bonding, and now that I have two I can really see how much Karl longed for company.

I think you should give it a chance It sounds like you already have your hands full with animals, so I cannot see that one more bunny could be problematic for you.

I know I have lots of pets and since I don’t work outside the home, I have plenty of time to take care of all of them really good and keep my house clean constantly picking up pet hair and vacuming!! I feel that I should take the chance too. We are going to move out into the country more in a more spacious area and that will be a plus too except the I will have to not allow three of my outdoor kitties to stay out at night because of predators. I do love animals. Hunny has never been sick and is in excellent heath. The breeder I got her from is not one of these breeders who don’t care. She really loves her bunnies and chooses very carefully of how to mate bunnies with gentle temperments etc. She came over a couple weeks ago and was in awe of how huge Hunny Bunny is. Hunny even plays with me with one of those cat toys that is on a stick with a string and a toy at the end. She loves to pounce on it and she hops up and down on it. I wish my camera could take a video of it but it don’t take good videos inside because of the lighting being so dark. The Netherland dwarfs that are being born this month, the mother has blue eyes. She was very happy to see what a good home that Hunny Bunny got. When we move I am also going to get a nanny goat and some chickens and ducks and geese.

Oh, please do try to see if you can film Hunny playing with the cat toys!! Sounds like fun.

You want to do it…and you should I mean, if you live with 7 cats, you obviously have the patience, and as you say you are already vacuming every day (so am I!). I cannot see why not. Only thing is that Hunny may not see all the fun in a baby bunny, but of course eventually the new bunny will grow up and be a playful teenager she can have fun with.

I wish I could live like you do! My boyfriend and I are moving out into the country as well next year, and he has promised me I can have an endless amount of animals, but I am not ready for it yet ’cause it really does make holidaying difficult. So I have to restrain myself until I am tired of travelling abroad.

Having all these pets does tie me down at times and I am very picky on who takes care of them when I have to go for a day or two. I am having to take short trips up north near the Canadian border in Wa state where we are going to move. My pets have anxiety separation. I get my daughter to come in the house twice a day because she just lives down the street to keep the cats litter box scooped out twice a day and feed and check on them. Hunny seems to do fine as I put her in a large enclosed plastic fencing that is six feet by three feet. The last time I was gone, my Persian kitty Lady Jane puked everywhere in the house and it attracted ants! Hunny Bunny tried to knock down her fence in the space she was in. So, next weekend when I go up there, I am taking Hunny with me. My husband has a small apartment until we get a place. Hunny loves to drive in the car with me by the way. She don’t have to stay in a cage. She will sit alongside me on the passenger side and stay there and not jump down or get upset or nervous. The breeders children carried about her and her siblings when they were babies in their backpacks when they would ride bikes so they are used to movement. When kids come into our house, Hunny runs up to them to greet them and wants attention. She really loves kids and I have 11 grandkids and he is wonderful with them. I have some videos posted on my facebook page of her.

A word of caution… many times people make breed generalizations that are not true, or have very little research behind them. Do be aware however that Netherland Dwarfs are PROBABLY not going to be as calm and docile as your large lop. So if that is what you and your grandchildren are used to, I just don’t want you to be surprised if the little guy bites or is very skittish. Many people have wonderful ND bunnies that are calm and sweet, but that is not always the case. If you are going to have bunnies around children, it’s preferable to have a larger breed that they are not going to try to pick up.

It usually works better to take your rabbit to a shelter where she can pick out an adult, altered friend of her own choosing, but it might be possible to get a baby and bond them once the baby is older and neutered.

I have a neatherland dwarf and he is a zooming frantic rushing never stopping into everything! I know a few people with Bunnies who see to be happy to lie around all day, basically if Bugs is out of the cage he is moving! However if is a little scared of me but has never bitten or scratched me. Is there a shelter near you that has Bunnies? i agree with seeing if Hunny can pick her future husband!

I personally wouldn’t recommend just bringing a bunny into the house without first seeing how the future bunny and Hunny Bunny get along. Bunny bonding is a very complicated thing, and it can be made very difficult if the two bunnies don’t get along, and you would have to be prepared to keep both bunnies separately for as long as it takes to bond them, or permanently if they do not bond. Even though Hunny bunny sounds super sweet, sometimes two bunnies don’t get along for reasons that we can’t understand. For that reason, I really recommend taking Hunny Bunny to a rescue to “date” some other bunnies to see how she does, and allow her to pick a mate.

I have two netherland dwarfs, and they are pretty much the opposite personalities of my larger bunnies. They are pretty skittish, and startle easily, and really prefer to observe me from afar than hang out with me They are very sweet, but generally just a little more nervous.
