So I woke up this morning, come out of my bedroom, wander through the living room…. see a little black thing zip by me. Somehow, between the time my hubby went to work, and me waking up, Monkey figured out how to escape her pen. Little goober. So who knows what she got into! I’ll have to inspect the entire place today, make sure no cords were eated, nothign damaged…. *sigh*

Hee, hee. I’m sure she found something out there to get in to. Did you figure out how she escaped yet?

Oh my silly bunnies. Does her cage have a top to it? I was stumped as to how Samson was escaping from his cage area when he was a baby… and I couldnt figure it out forever. Then one night my bf was reading in Sammys room and pop up onto the bed hops a bunny straight out of his cage. We had to attach a sheet on top so that he couldnt do that anymore. Then he discovered that if he chewed on the bars and pulled at just the right angle he could get the cage wedged up on his ramp and escape out the bottom… so once again we had to fix the cage. The only damage he did was to claim the bed as his and leave a nice big pee spot on it with lots of poos around the edges.
Luckily the boys have full range of the downstairs of my new house…. bunnies really are smart!! Hope nothing was damaged at your place

i have NO idea. Her pen is still securely fastened to the cage, and its rather heavy.

And yes, her cage has a top, but her pen doesn’t. She’s never been able to hop over the pen, its been too high for her. Unless she was going binky crazy I suppose, she got near the top when she did a straight up in the air binky once. Maybe she was doing that and found herself on the other side lol.

Is there anything on the other side that she could jump onto? I find that Samson wont jump over the babygate normally but if there is something on the other side that he could land on he is much more likely to make the jump.

Sometimes they can climb…and I’m not saying it’s your fault but with a name like Monkey I’m sure that’s how she got out!! Kokanee could and would climb gates

Coco can do a hell of a vertical leap. I once saw her spring up and Out of her cage through the top, so I know she CAN jump if she so desires, and MUCH higher than I suspected.

Jackson was funny to watch – He kept escaping from the NIC barrier so I hid outside his door to watch him as I was SURE I had very tightly fastened the gate. He would dig on the throw carpet until he had it bunched up slightly in front of him – Then he would grab the bunch with his teeth and PULL-Pull-Pull back until the gate got loosened. As soon as he saw he Could do this, we was unstoppable. I had to wedge a broom handle in the gate and remove the carpet to prevent him from getting out.

Pretty much I found if there was an area I didn’t want her/him to be in – They were attracted to that area. It was a problem to solve. They became un-distractable in their pursuit of the goal.

Well, if she IS climbing, not much I can do about it. Just have to bunny proof the apartment, and let her have her way i guess

Its secured to her cage quite well, and far too heavy for my itty bitty bun, theres no way she can lift it

When Calypso was just a baby, he surprised me in the middle of the night by jumping up on the bed and binkying around in a fit of bunny excitement. I figured that he had jumped out of his pen, so I made it taller. Next night, same thing. Turns out he was climbing out, and was just as pleased as punch with himself. And, just like Balefulregards said, he always a had project of some sort on the go, that I had to try to distract him from. He doesn’t have projects anymore, but when he was younger, as soon as the cage was opened, he beelined for whatever he was “working on”. lol. Such a handful sometimes!

Yep they can jump and climb.

I had Cotton in his xpen when he was young.  I let him out once.  Thats all it took.  He would leap as high as he could and hang on the 2nd from the top bar.   Then he would climb up sit on the top and leap to my sewing table.   I started putting a sheet and holding it on there with clothes pins.   HE doesn’t do that anymore however he is free range all day long.   IN the living room that is.

Torri could jump out of her pen/gate. It was 2 NIC panels high and she would just jump right up and over it. We had to make it 3 high!!

Bugsy can clear NIC 2 high as well. She can also jump on my bed & I almost need a ladder to get in it, they make them so high now.
She is funny to watch from in bed.

                                        LOL furface

I just have to add that Sammy does not climb on anything, ever, (weird bunny) but she is focused on getting into the bedroom whenever she can.
I left the door open after work today, and she’s in there now.
She ran all the way to me here, stood next to her basket, then ran full speed back into the bedroom when she knew i was looking.
                                        She came to the doorway.
Half a step inside. Won’t come out. If bunnies could laugh, she’d be cackling.

Well, we’re slowly getting to the point where she’ll be allowed out into the main part of the apartment anyway, she’s been such a good girl with her potty and everything. She even held it until she got back into her pen when she escaped, didnt go anywhere when she was out.

For the record, this is the type of thinking that had me stumped with Maryann for the longest time.  Her pen was secured tightly and yet she’d suddenly be outside of it, running around the living room (her pen is in the bedroom).  Her escape was always preceeded by a loud “clang!” but there was no way she was strong enough to open them.

Then, I managed to walk in on her during the middle of one of her escapes.  What she would do is push her food bowl between the two panels of the pen that came around and I closed with a dog collar clip.  The bowl would work as a wedge and actually push the bars far enough apart that she could squeeze through it.  The “Clang” came as she hopped off of the bowl and it snapped back into the pen – leaving all trace of her escape gone.

The thing is that she was incredibly lucky because there was enough force in that to seriously hurt her.  But she was never a bun to fear danger.

I feel a little better knowing I don’t have the only escape artist. I was securing the door on Freya’s condo with the office clip things and it seemed to be working just fine. Easy to open and take care of her and the condo but secure enough to keep her majesty inside. Til one morning when it was still pitch black outside I roll over and tuck myself back in after my husbnd gets out of bed. I drift back off to sleep only to hear a sudden “gotcha!!!” and see him holding her. We bought padlocks that day, until she learns to turn a key in a lock she’s not getting out again without permission.

So how high can bunnies jump? Right now I have a doggie pen for Arduina (2ft square panels). As a baby it was fine to have her in the pen, but at about 3 months old she learned to jump out (with a broken leg!), so I had to remove 2 of the eight panels and zip tie them to the top, so now it is 4x2x2ft. I’d like to either get something bigger, or just give her full access to ‘her bedroom’. She does get lots of run time each day, but if I were to get another doggie pen, I am wondering what size (how tall?) I should get? Probably the 3 or 4 ft high one would work? I have to keep the door shut to ‘her room’ because I know she could jump over a baby gate.

Freya used to play with a box that was about 20 inches square. At about 2 months old she was getting on top of that, I have no idea how high she actually CAN jump, just how high she’s managed so far lol.
