        Hey Everyone,

I’ve only been a rabbit owner for over a month now and I’ve just fallen in love with the little creatures. I want to help rescue bunnies and I was telling my partner this the other night and his response was why don’t you start up your own charity.

I’ve done some research into it and eveyrthing but i’m a little unsure. I know it would be a lot of time and money of my own getting it started but I think i really could do it.

Thanks to Jersery Girl I went onto the make mine chocolate website and that’s where I was like there isnt anything like this in Australia unless I skipped over it somewhere.

I ordered make mine chocolate bumper stickers for our cars lol

I know it doesn’t sound too well planned at the moment only because we started talking about it the other night.

What does everyone else think about this???

Well, I’m not sure what it takes to start a non-profit in Australia but I think you are better off in the beginning trying to find some local rescues to work with and learn the ropes and what is involved. Especially if you are unsure and have never done rescue work before or worked for a non-profit. It’s a huge commitment and requires alot of money (usually yours when you start out) and alot of time. You definitely will need support too – you cannot do this alone.

I agree with Sarita. Running a rescue can be a full time job and there are so many things to consider that you may never think of. I know I’ve learned a ton about how to rescue animals by working with established rescues already. If you’re feeling the pull to do rescue work you can start out by volunteering and make it a point to get close to the core group of volunteers. Every rescue has one. Once you show them how dedicated you are you can start taking some of the responsibility off their plates and fulfill your need to help.

I’m going to look at other ways to raise money for bunnies but at the moment I dont think its fair on any bunny that i have a rescue as I’m only 21. I’m pretty creative so I might straight sewing again and making little cute bunnies and sell them over the internet and give a percentage to rabbit rescues.

I’m not going to rush into it as yet. I want to think about it and be able to plan it. I made a rabbit in high school and i made a giant one for my cousin once.

Looks like i’ll be going to study journalism next semester so i might be able to volunteer at rescues etc etc on weekends or something. I’m just looking into everything at the moment. I need to consider all my options at the moment.

Have you looked at the “Partner with us” option on the MMC website? That may be a good way to start while you educate yourself about other ways you can help.

I don’t think there are that many rabbit specific rescues here in Australia – least that is the case for my state. I think money and education are 2 ways that would really help rescues.

So personal fund raising does not have to be specific bunny related tasks. i.e. You can use your sewing skill to make and sell anything(not just bunnies) but choose to donate your profits toward a rescue. You know, with the current big push toward Bring your Own Bag for shopping that is present at the moment, you could make tote bags to sell.

If you happen to be a well paid professional, you could donate a % of your income toward rabbit rescue. Even a lower wage earner can start by alloting a small weekly amount toward a cause they’re passionate about.

Also, educating the public to the misconceptions about rabbits and responsible ownership can have an impact to. You don’t have to go really big in the beginning to make a difference. Just start orientating your focus to the needs and work from there.

Yeah there is hardly anything in Australia. It seems there are a few places in Victoria but nothing in New South Wales.

I’ve let Pancakes out of the cage so she has the ktichen dining room and lounge room to run around and just blocked off all the other rooms and she is having a ball and was playing with the cat lol
