Hi, it s watermellon season and I was wondering if fern could have a little bit of watermellon, I ate some and she started licking my fingers so I know she would like some.

        Thanks

Water melon can be a welcome treat on a hot day, but always give sparingly because of the high sugar content. I wonder if it may be a bloating fruit, though, because even people apparently should not eat it with any other food together, just by itself as it does not combine well (gas). This at least it says on my food chart.

I just check the House Rabbit Society (www.rabbit.org) for fruits, and this was the list they gave of approved fruits. The warning is that there is that high sugar content. It didn’t specifically say watermelon, but Melon probably includes it, and cantaloupe. I would use it very sparingly, cutting tiny pieces and removing all bits of seeds. When I eat watermelon, I lick the sugar off my fingers, too.

            Apple (remove stem and seeds)
            Blueberries
            Melon
            Orange (without the peel)
            Papaya
            Peach
            Pear
            Pineapple
            Plums
            Raspberries
            Strawberries

Sugary fruits such as bananas and grapes should be used only sparingly, as occasional treats. Bunnies have a sweet tooth and if left to their own devices will devour sugary foods to the exclusion of healthful ones.

Thanks I gave her a little bit and she loved it! She only gets treats like two times a week and it is always a small amount.

I have given watermelon to my hamsters and parrots before- have not tried it yet with the bunnies.  To make it a little less messy- I usually chop it into cubes and put them on paper towels for a couple of minutes- it removes some of the excess water.  My bunnies would probably go nuts if watermelon “juice” from a piece of melon got on their blankets or something else in there cage- they are such fruit hogs.  They only get fruit sparingly but the act like they are starved- so my husband and I will occasionally make pig snorting noises while watching them inhale their fruit treat.

Speaking of watermelon- I have this pic of my parrot- he would never eat that much watermelon but I wanted to see what he would do with it.

What a cool picture! Almost looks like a watermelon coloured fantail!
