Mr. Bunny has been shedding heavily for almost a month now, and I’ve started noticing a few poos that are stuck together by poop-covered fur. (Yes, I picked once apart to see.)

I know this means he’s probably ingesting a lot of fur, and I’ve heard that bunnies should be given some petromalt if you see this…but where can I get it, and does it really help? Is it good or bad to be seeing poops like this, and is there anything else I can give him to help hair pass through him?

Petromalt can be normally found at a pet store – some are meat flavored so you will want to avoid that. Now, in regards to whether they work or not; Some experts feel it does, while others disagree.

My advice would be to brush more often during a molt. Make sure your bunny eats less treats and more fiber (lots of hay) which will help with digesting the fur.

I think it is normal to see some “pearl” poops during this time, and it’s good that you are seeing it pass, but this does indicate more hair, so you want to just make sure that it continues to pass through - that’s why fiber intake and brushing is very important during this time.

Stormy often gets these during a shed and sometimes even when he’s not shedding so much. I have never used Petromalt. When I see these poops I make sure to brush every day until no longer needed and offer fresh pineapple and/or dried papaya.
