I want to send an editorial to my local newspaper on not buying bunnies for Easter presents. I know I seen a sample editorial on a rabbit site somewhere but I can’t find it. Anyone ever see one I could use? I’ll write my own if I have to but I would like to do it the lazy way

The Make Mine Chocolate website has a letter to the editor that you can use as well as letters that can be sent to photographers. They have some great flyers as well.

I sent a bunch out to local photographers that we know use buns at Easter time. I also sent their editor letter to our local paper but waiting to hear back if they are going to use it.

This is the article I ended up sending, parts of it are from other articles, I just sort of made it my own a bit. I hope they publish it!

Dear Editor:
 
Over the next few weeks, pet stores will be stocking up on adorable, baby bunnies and thousands of adults will be tempted to buy a rabbit for a child as an Easter gift . I ask anyone who is considering buying a rabbit this year to stop and think about these important facts:
 
First, although rabbits can make wonderful pets, they are naturally fragile and timid.  An active child who expects a cuddly pet can easily terrify or even injure a rabbit.
 
Second, a well cared for rabbit can live ten years or longer and will require just as much love, attention, and veterinary care as a dog or cat would.  So don’t give an Easter rabbit to a child unless you know the parents will be happy to take on a decade-long commitment.

Hundreds of rabbits end up at shelters or set “free” after the novelty wears off. Rabbits cannot be set “free” out of doors- it’s a death sentence. They are usually killed by predators, cars or the elements within 72 hours, suffering terribly.

If you want to make a child’s Easter happy, don’t give a live rabbit unless you know it will be loved and cared for throughout its life.  If there’s any doubt, give a plush or chocolate bunny instead. A Rabbit is NOT a Child’s Toy or a disposable pet. It’s a 10 year commitment.
