So I have had my physical card stolen before, and I’ve had my card  number only stolen before, (many many years ago) where some big numbskull bought expensive seats to a 49er game and had the tickets shipped to his home.  So not only would someone know where he lived, but where he was sitting at the game.  That was an easy catch for police. Nice.  . It was narrowed down to someone swiping my card at a restaurant we just visited.

But this time someone stole one of our card numbers, but created an actual counterfeit card that they could take with them into the store and they went on a shopping spree today.  And they were in CANADA!    The card # that was stolen has never been used online,  (and we still have the physical card) so wherever it was used, either the merchants info has been compromised or someone stuck one of those things in the place where you swipe your card to steal the info (notorious at gas stations!)  or ??, and used the numbers to make the counterfeit card and sell them or use them.  I am guessing.

Anyway, all is fine, we caught it within just a few hours of it happening and we will be getting the funds returned within 24 hours, but what a nice and warm fuzzy feeling for the holidays, all cuddly with thieves, giving them a $800 shopping spree today at some Walmart, in Pickering, Ontario, Canada.  What fun….  Grrrrrrrr.

Yep, I had my card number stolen, and was used in a bunch of places down in San Diego.

            Jeez, BB, that is terrible.
I am so glad you guys knew what to do to get it fixed the same day. Maybe it’s a sign to be extra diligent this month with where your cards are, and checking your account activities. I think mine will notify me automatically if used more than a few miles from here.

A few months ago I took all my cards out of my wallet, lay them on my scanner, and printed out a photo of what I carry around with me. That way, if purse is stolen, I can remember what was in it and do the cancellation calls, etc. More often lately I just stick my license and one ATM card into a pocket. Men do that. Course, they never need tissues or lipstick either…..

That’s awful, but glad you caught it! I hear of this happening a lot lately. It makes me angry! That’s funny about the 49ers tix….lol, stupid criminal.

A little while ago someone hacked into my Mom’s bank account and stole $3000.00. She caught it right away, though, and the money was returned.

Yikes! Glad that it got fixed BB

I have never gotten my card number stolen and hope to keep it that way. I frequently check my bank statements online to see my present balance and such.

I’ve only just gotten my credit card a couple months ago, so I’ve never had it stolen or anything, but I do keep track of everything I spend in a word document, so that I know how much I have in my account, even if it’s like $1.00 for a candy bar, I’ll write it down. So I know if anything comes out that’s not supposed to! I’m glad you got it sorted out though.

So scary how people can do that it’s like no one is safe 😐 My mum got her credit card number stolen along with £2000. Argos/tescos all sorts of weird randoml purchases and in an area in UK we’ve never even been to and it was all coming up on her statement. We had to wait in the police station for over 12 hours for them to actually see us to report the case and get her money back they were completely unhelpful and took as long as they could =( It’s so scary since I do so much online shopping. Its horrible especially at a time like this where it’s all about giving. At least no physical money was stolen and you got it back from the bank so quickly!
Do you know if they’ve caught the culprit(s)? I’ve also heard of programs for android phones etc where you can access it remotely to take photos of the thieves faces and stuff which I downloaded and works quite well.
                      All the best! Xxxx

My debit card number was used to purchase plane tickets in Canada before. The airline had already caught it before I even noticed. I saw a charge on my account and then a credit. What was weird was that the amounts were slightly different. Turns out the charge was one day and the credit the next and the exchange rate had changed. They both showed up on my account the same day though. My bank gave me the $2 difference. I think what happened was my number was one of the one compromised when a system got hacked into. The bank had sent me a new card, but I hadn’t activated it yet.

Never had a card stolen and use the cards everywhere. But, when I get a receipt with my card # on it at all I tear it up. And it only leaves our hands when it’s to a waiter/waitress and we go to the same restaurants all the time, request the same servers, so it’s not like random person X has our card for a few minutes to copy. And any time one of our online uses gets hacked and info stolen our bank automatically flags the account to watch and sends a new card out.

Yikes! Glad everything got sorted out!!

I’ve never had it happen to me, but my old bosses daughter had her entire identity stolen. Someone stole her purse in a Mexcan Airport, and with her Credit Card and Birth Certificate the thief was able to get a new SIN and Drivers License under that name and applied for new credit cards. The original card was cancelled right away, but my bosses daughter was contacted by debt collectors for these cards she never knew about. It ended up being a big court case before everything was sorted out.

I’ve had my bank think my card was stolen quite a few times though Once while I was in Italy they froze my accounts, even though I told them I was going… and ordered my euros through them. And my first semester in University, I opened up a special school account for the sole purpose of tuition and books, so the limit was extremely high. Then I paid the tuition and books and wasn’t able to pay for my dinner that night… because they froze my accounts for “suspicious spending” even though I wasn’t near my limit

Oh no! Glad you managed to get things ironed out though. Luckily I’ve never had my account information compromised…*crosses fingers*.
