I was wondering, I was thinking if it was OK to put the pen around the hutch and have a ramp to let Pablo go up and down as he pleases. Butthe hutch is painted red. What if he chews the red right off?! Is paint toxic? My dad bought me the hutch at a farm place. Is the paint toxic you think? I’m not sure what kind of paint it is, but I don’t know if I should risk it.

Any suggestions on how to protect the legs of the hutch?

It depends on the kind of paint, how old it is, etc. But I wouldn’t let him chew on it regardless. You could always sand off the paint

Monkeybun: I am actually thinking of getting a different hutch off ebay. I may make my own.

Can I ask why you want a hutch to begin with? They are so cramped and small for a rabbit.

S&L – it sounds like she wants to use the hutch as a playhouse within a pen, which would be fine.

Pandorachik – making your own would be a great idea! It could be a fun project, and you could pick exactly what you want and make sure you’re not giving Pablo anything toxic . If you keep the current one though, you could always do something like wrapping the legs in cardboard to make sure Pablo can’t get to them.

If you do decide to make your own, they make soy based paints. I found them at hobby lobby but I’m sure you could find them at a local craft shop or online. If you want to paint the hutch if you do make your own that would be a safer option. They actually had quite a wide variety of colors too!

I found a 50” dog crate. It’s like $30. My question is, if he’s on the backporch.. will he get chilled on the floor? It’s almost summer. I have a small heat pad made for bunnies I have only used it twice though. My mom thinks they outta be off the ground That Is why I have a hutch. SHE insisted *rolls eyes*

Buns like it colder – as far as summer – I plan on getting mine a few tiles to lay on and will be putting some ice packs in with him during the warmer times. I like your idea of having a raised hutch option for him that he can decide to be in or out. But I agree – just cover the legs and you don’t need a whole new hutch. Or at least for the time being you can cover the legs while you make another too. Good luck!

Yeah, I would sand the paint off or just cover the painted legs with raw wood (just like a sleeve of wood around the painted part)

I like the raw wood cover around the legs idea. Just be sure, when you buy the wood, to get “Untreated” pine or another wood that’s safe, such as aspen. Cedar is not safe, and some of the pine sold in stores is treated. (Like for a porch)

Ok, I have some plywood, would that do? I am not sure if it’s treated I am not going to risk it. I will use cardboard or buy wood!
                              Thanks for the good ideas!
