X Pens- what height?

I figure I better ask this before I NEED to know.  Tonight I was giving the bunnies their salads and Schroeder jumped out of his NIC pen.  He has come close before and only ever at feeding time- he use to jump and hang, then drop back down.  But he clearly jumped out- and I had to let him BACK in so he could eat his salad.

I might have to replace his pen with a X Pen- what height do you use and have had luck with?

He gets so excited at pellet and salad time- that is the only time EVER that he jumps like that- it is as if we can’t deliver his food fast enough to suit him!

cover it with a blanket then he thinks it s a top so he cant get out.

I use the ex-pens that are around 3 feet or 3 and a half feet high, and I have a little trouble leaning over those because I’m pretty short, so I prefer the ones that are a little bit shorter. Henri got super excited for food today, and he jumped right up the side of his cage, and landed on top of Amelia’s second story! He still took a treat even from up there, hahaha. Mine are like yours, they usually ping off the sides of the cages at food time, but I don’t have problems the rest of the day. I call it their James Bond move when they climb up the side of the cage.

I bought a X pen from drfostersmith.com and it has 8 panels and measures 29 1/4″ inch high panels. None of my bunnies has jumped over it. It’s really nice and you can buy extra panels for it to make it larger. It also has a mat for the floor or you can use it as cover for the top if you use it outdoors. I love mine and so do my bunnies!

We have the 36 inch Midwest pens and except for ONE TIME when Max found his way BEHIND it in the middle of the night, we’ve never had an issue. (I still don’t know how he got over?) They also have 42 inch but I think that’s a bit excessive unless you have a bun who continually jumps out of shorter pens…

Some rabbits climb with unexpected dexterity. I have one like that, and any enclosure of mine must have a top for that reason.

I have a 3 footer because that was the recommended height that I read online. However, Otto won’t even jump over a 15 inch NIC barrier, so the 3ft pen looks like overkill 😉

I do like that I can have his two level maze haven inside and there’s still some pen stretching above it. Just in case he gets any idea of climbing to the top of the maze and jumping out.

We have the pen 3 cubes high now and that seems to work.  Griffin can clear 2 cubes from a sitting position- we saw him do it yesterday and it was surprising to say the least.  He was looking at the divider and just jumped over it- no warning.

WOW! I’d probably go with the 42 inch then… or maybe he’s just preparing you for the day he decides “Silly slave, I’m a free-roamer!”

Good grief! I always thought the 36″ would be good, but if you have a jumper it’s a whole different ballgame. They do make tops for some of them depending on the type you get. I think it’s worth having just in case.
