Lilly is a 12 week old mini-rex. She has been doing great and responding to her training. But today, when we let her out of her cage, it was like we had a totally different rabbit. She nipping at us, ripping at the carpet, digging where she shouldn’t, and stomping her back feet from time to time. We are a bit confused. I’m assuming its hormones that are starting to kick in?She’s still too young to get spayed, so if so, what should we do to discourage these habits while still trying to maintain a positive relationship with her?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

That’s a little young for hormones, typically starts in about another 4 weeks for females, but it’s possible she’s starting early. What is her toy situation like? How many toys does she have? Destructive rabbits are often bored rabbits. And it really helps if you change toys as often as you can, so they have new things. I rotate Cinnabun’s toys about every two weeks, adding new things, or putting in something she hasn’t seen in a while. The carpet issue: you can try discouraging her from ripping/digging at the carpet in a variety of ways: 1) cover that area if it’s one in particular. 2) loud noises, like clapping hands and distract her (don’t chase your bun. They are prey animals and scare very easily) 3) If it gets bad, I used regular yellow Dial soap on areas Cinnabun really loved to dig at. The smell and taste put her off it.
It’s also very possible that she’s a diva! Many of the female buns on this site are divas with serious bun-attude. Mostly, it’s charming.

Sounds like attitude! I wouldn’t say it’s a sign that she needs to be spayed quite yet, just that she’s getting older and her personality is developing.

My favorite way of dealing with carpet chewing issues is to get some square tiles at the hardware store. Cover up the spots for a while, and after a bit they’ll forget about it. Just make sure to rinse off the tiles to get rid of all the dust and dirt from the store.

I think it is hormones kicking in. You may just have to put up with this until the spay and she ages.

She very well may be becoming a diva! I think she thinks she’s the boss of the house! As far as toys, she has a cardboard box fort, a stuffed toy (with no buttons or anything), a chew toy with interchangeable cubes, and yesterday I filled a paper bag with hay and let her dig in it for treats. It kept her occupied for a few minutes until she tried to dig the carpet again. I think I’ll try and pick her up a few more toys this weekend. Also, the attitude seems to go in waves. Shortly after I posted this she started acting good, but this morning she was all into digging the carpet again. She sure knows how to keep us busy!
