Does anyone’s molts start at the butt area? I thought they were supposed to start around the neck. Medusa hasn’t had a molt yet, but she has been having some loose fur around the butt. I am hoping this is her molt because the longer it goes I worry about it.

Yes, my lionhead Kahlua does start to molt around his hiney. It sticks out and I know that it’s time for brushing.

With Pepper, light sheds start around her butt ,  but she’s totally blowing her entire coat right now (we hit the low 80s for the first time last week).  She’s looking all ratty and trailing small clouds of grey fur wherever she goes!  I gave up the other day and just held her still and plucked about 1/2 lb of fluff off of her!  I’m sure she feels better now, though she’ll never admit it.

My girls both molt in their behind areas. They fight the brush so I just pull gobs of hair out when I sit and pet them..

My buns always start in the rear end as well.  The only time I see it on their head is on the very front.  Since you have allergies – I would definitely recommend grooming Medusa wuth a brush as much as possible, since molt time is when I start sneezing the most!

Ok so it looks like molts can start from the front or the back.

Do they lose the hair on their ears too? Medusa’s ears are flaky like Patina’s were before her molt (as Fujoe shared) and she is losing hair on them. Can’t be mites- I just gave her Revolution a few weeks ago.

But she only lost 2 small hair wads from her butt and thats it. I am waiting for the rest. I hope it comes soon!

Yes, Pepper’s ear-fur gets kind of thin and patchy when she’s in a shed.

When I said there is fluff EVERYWHERE, I though I was exagerating.

I just finished cleaning my ceiling fan.  Wow.

i think it’s pretty common – since all of my buns molt first down around their tails and back paws

I’ve never fully paid much attention to where a molt starts, but I find that mine seem to be around the back and hind side. But it also could be because those are places that they can’t easily reach, so their own grooming falls short there, and we end up noticing more loose hair there. So I don’t know if it actually starts there, or if that’s just where most bunnies left off.

one of my guilty pleasures is pulling little trufts of hair from my bunnies… you know, the ones that a whole clump of hair comes out at once…

I do a binky every time it happens!

Hahaha Fujoe, I am the same way! Something is very satisfying about getting all of those falling out furs off a bunny Its probably good for them not to swallow all that fur too!

Fujoe and MooBunnay – that is so funny because I am the same way. It becomes almost OCD if while I’m doing that they decide to go exploring and leave right in the middle with a tuff of loose hair really sticking out. Everytime they then hop by, I just HAVE to get it.

Um so Medusa lost hair on her ears, but now nothing. I REALLY want her to molt NOW! Because I’m going to have to leave her for like a week at the end of the month with my family and later for the most of August with Pookers’ parents. I want her to molt under my supervision so she doesn’t get the GI.

Has anyone been able to induce molting in their buns?
