Where did you get your X-pens, and how much was it for what size?

We need something like an x-pen to block off half of the living room where the bunz are marking…we are trying to train them.  So far its been either one of us sitting on the floor playing goalie.   The width btw the wall and the couch is about 5 feet.

I just went to Petco (Yeah I know they are bad but I just stopped in to get ideas) and their x-pens were wicked expensive.

I then went to Home Depot and they only had 2 kinds of gates, and both were the kind you hook into a door jam.

Target only had expensive baby gates.

If anyone has any ideas for alternatives that would be great.

Also Hugo is a very good acrobat so the blockade would have to be tall…

check thrift stores!!! I found one of my baby gates on the side of the street… It was kind of broken, but what we did was take some “l” screws and hung the gate on that on either sides of the doorway…. the other baby gate was brand new and I found it at a thrift store for $3 I think.

We need to block off the kitchen and what I think we are going to do is get some of those cube-it things and just make a gate, then use the L screws (they might be called L hooks, I’m not sure) to hang on. It would be cheaper than buying a gate new.

Xpens are expensive, around $50, but check around. I find petco to be more expensive than pet food express. go online and see if you can find something, however they are heavy and large, so shipping would cost a lot. good luck.

Xpens are expensive around here too, in the 50-70 dollar range.  Is there an active freecycle group in your area?  Sometimes people have stuff sitting in their garage that can be useful.

If you are not familiar with Freecycle, is is a way to hook up people with extra stuff who are willing to give it away to people who can use it.  It is a wonderful idea, I have gotten rid of several things that would have been landfilled and people were able to use them.  You can start here http://www.freecycle.org/

Craigslist is another good one to try, someone may be selling one in your area.

I have also found all kinds of gates at thrift stores.  Also, I have used craigslist.org to get new or preowned stuff in great condition.    A third of our computer stuff we’ve gotten from there and paid a fraction of the price. (everything we ever got worked)

If you are wanting a cheap alternative you should consider the NIC or Organize It cubes.

We have to fence off our kitchen because the buns like to hide/play behind the fridge and oven and we also have steps leading to our unfinished basement and we dont want them down there.

We just used zip ties along with the plastic connectors that come with the cubes to make our own "baby gate." We have tried baby gates before and they were worthless. The possibilities with these cubes are endless! We use them to block off all kinds of stuff around the house-even around our computer stuff.

Not a really good picture but it gives you an idea..

you’ve gotten great advice – my one recommendation is make sure to buy a tall enough one. the shorter ones are less expensive, so I bought 2 when I was working to bond my bunnies. they hopped right over them!

When I was a kid my mom used a big folding cardboard sewing / pattern board to keep our buns in the family room. I have no idea what it’s actually called – but it worked really well.

yeah, at 2′ my 3-4lb bunny has learned to leap over it.  =( I think the NIC cage idea might just work for me though =)  Thanks!

Both of my bunnies could jump over my little gate too but they see it as more of an off limits area. If we accidently leave it open they walk in, act really guilty and usually come right back out. lol Its pretty sturdy using both the plastic connectors and zip ties so it could easily be built a few feet higher if needed.

We also use them to block off the area around our computer stuff that sits on the floor and the little space that goes behind our new couch.

                        I love those things!

Hedi – we use those short ones for around the TV & stereo and it works great too!

The cost for x-pens is crazy! I have two x-pens set up as my buns play area. I brought the first one from E-Bay and the second from House Rabbit Society. They not as expensive at HRS. Just make sure you buy the tall ones. You don’t want them jumping over!

Get them from Petco online when they are onsale. Right now they are not onsale, but they usually are. I got Precision Pet for $60. You can get a smaller size one for $40. Petco also has $10 off for first time google checkout users. Rabbit rescue is almost always overpriced for Pens or Carefresh.

Seriously, people. EBAY. I got a Puppy pen for Sophie, that is 16-20 feet in diameter depending on how it’s set up. I have it set up as an octagon with Sophie’s two floor condo in the far back corner so she has this awesome “front yard” and “side yard”. Total cost, with shipping was $29.99!!!! love ebay, i am a complete addict.
