Infected genitals?

 Okay – before i begin and EVERYONE attacks me… yes, I will be calling the vet first thing in the morning.

but hopefully someone is out there in binkyland tonight that might be able to give me some insight right now, so perhaps I can sleep a little tonight.

 

Tonight I grabbed lulla for a nail trim, flipped her over, and immediately noticed her genitals were inflammed. They are swollen and warm. They appear to be tender to her. There appears to be a lining of crust along the urethra… i’m not exactly sure if it’s called urethra on rabbits. The pee hole/vagina, for lack of a better word. Her anal glands appear crusty as well. There seems to be hard brown spots, maybe poop thats gotten hard. This was not here the last time I did her nails, which I do not remember when that was. Her behavior has not seemed any different. She is eating and drinking well. She is acting normally. Except I have noticed she is much more cranky lately. But I assumed thats because we added a new cat to our family and Lulla doesn’t approve of her. Other than that she’s been normal. She has peed on my bed twice in the past week, but again I attributed this to her disatistfaction as opposed to a medical issue. About a week or two ago, I thought she was not drinking. I wasn’t sure that she wasn’t drinking because I hadn’t been home enough to notice if she had drank the water in the bottle or it had dripped out since it was a tad leaky. So I bought her a new bottle and I’ve seen her drink plently since and brushed it off.

I’ve attached a picture i took. Its not very good but its the best I could get, I had to resize to upload. You can tell its very swollen but you can’t see the crustyness and that its warm to the touch. I put some neosporin on it, in case if it were from a injury or just hoping I could offer her relief at all for right now until I can try to get her in tomorrow. Does anyone know what this is? I thought maybe urine scald or a UTI. I googled it and tried to find pictures, but I was unsucessful in coming to a conclusion as to what it might be.

The crusties and redness make me think vent disease — which is treatable.My very first rabbit had that and after a serious of injections it was gone and never returned. (It is spread amongst other rabbits either  – from mother and siblings).  It’s also called rabbit syphilis (not to be confused with the human version). It can many times spread to eyes and nose since rabbits clean themselves and spread it this way. It is contagious amongst other rabbits.

How long have you had her and how old is she?

Obviously there is no way to know for sure what it is. But either way, like you know already, a vet appointment will be your next step. Let us know how that goes. Do you have a rabbit savvy vet you trust?

I’ve had Lulla for almost her entire life, she’s around 4. She was spayed around 6 months, maybe a little later. I’ve taken her into the vet a couple times, but she hasn’t had any health issues since maybe 2 years ago. She’s a only bunny, no contact with other bunnies. We do have cats but they really stay away from each other. I read about vent disease a bit online tonight, she doesn’t appear to have major crustyness on the eyes or nose. She has had a little build up in her eyes lately, but not much more than normal. I’ve cleaned them out a couple times this week. I’m not sure if thats more than I normally do, I’ve only paid attention really since this happened.

My bunny didn’t have anything much on his eyes either. The fact that you have had her for 4 years makes me then think it may not be vent disease, however, I don’t know if it can stay dormant.

Is there pus? Could be an infection, scald or abscess brewing if you see pus. Regarding a UTI — do you notice her hanging out in her box more and/or peeing outside of her box more? Crankyness could be due to your cat, but bunnies that are uncomfortable or in pain can react that way too.

Well, let us know how it goes at the vets. Hopefully it’s something that is easily treatable and will offer her some relief as that can’t be too comfortable.

Update:

Took her to the vet today. Of course she wasn’t as red or swollen as she was last night down there but I decided to take her in anyway. I showed the vet the picture I posted on here . She seems to think its because Lulla is overweight (1lb overweight!) she can’t reach herself to clean properly and its caused and infection in her urogenital region. She cleaned her up a bit and gave us some antibacterial/steroid ointment to put on there for a few days in hopes that it clears up the redness. The vet also saw that she had an ear infection. So hopefully this will be cleared up soon. We’ll be going back in a week to make sure everything looks okay. She got her ears cleaned out as well and since she’s been home shes seemed much more spunky. Just wait until she finds out she’s going on a diet.

yes, ear drops and cleaning solution. I believe the ear drops are called Tresaderm and the ointment for her hoohah is called Panolog.

Just so you are aware- There is some debate on whether to use Tresaderm (a steroid) on rabbits. I had my rabbit on Tresaderm and he ended up getting very sick. Steroids suppress their immune system making them so much more vulnerable to other infections. Of course, you have to treat the ear infection so don’t stop it, but you will want to be aware of any other changes in behavior and watch for any other signs of sickness. The vet did mention that and said that its okay for the ear infection but its not okay to give oral steroids because it will make them sick and mess up their digestive tract.

Interesting! Mine said they were not good period but come to think of it, oral steroids seem much worse. Hope she’s doing well!

My vet said they didn’t like steroids either but felt it was the best way to go for Wooly’s eyelid thing. It worked and I didn’t have to use them for very long, so I think it was a good thing.

She’s doing better! Her lady parts look normal again, however i think she’s still having issues cleaning the area. We’ve only begun the diet. Less pellets and treats! I’ve been using baby wipes to clean her up every time I apply the ointment. Her fur around the region is sort of yellow, though i can’t tell if its from the ointment which has a yellow tint to it, or if its urine. So i’ve been just cleaning the entire area the best that I can before i apply the ointment. She seems more chipper as of late, and she’s not a fan of the ear drops but we’ve been at it every day. I actually think I’ve been giving her more treats because I feel so bad about the ear drops. She hates them!

Ok so adding on to this thread, I just rescued a Netherland dwarf buck from my step sister this week. he was outside in a bird cage with a rat, he pulled a lot of his fur because of the heat, louisiana in the summer, and his genitals seemed to be swollen from mosquito bites. I don’t think I can upload picture because I can’t resize it. The swelling has gone down but should I keep I’m in the cage for a few more days before letting him run around the living room? And there are not any electrical wires on the floor, I love my bunnies lol
