Sadly, our beloved rabbit Hazel passed away suddenly last week. This was made even harder as she died whilst in rabbit kennels, ironically as we had to go away to attend the funeral of my father in law, who also passed suddenly at the start of June (it’s not been a great month). I should point out that we do not in any way blame the rabbit kennels for her death (they were almost as devastated as we were!) – we have had both our rabbits in their care on many occassions and they are always treated very well with particular attention to eating etc, as our other rabbit Clarissa has had many bouts of gastrointestinal stasis in the past. Our vet thinks that as there were no signs of loss of appetite etc that she may have had a sudden heart attack.

We rescued Hazel in October 2008 when she was a young rabbit, following the passing of our second rabbit Leah. She instantly become part of the family, bonding well with our original rabbit Clarissa as well as us and our kids. She was a friendly, sociable rabbit who loved to play games, although she was also very mischievous, with one of her favourite tricks being deliberately knocking over my bottle of beer if I dared place it on the floor. She was also very agile and inquisitive, and once managed to climb up inside a free-standing conga drum which we have in our living room.

Now that Hazel has gone, our living room seems a bit empty and quiet in the evenings, and she is also missed by our children, who are very good with both our rabbits, and with whom she loved to play when she was in the mood. We are currently contemplating whether to get another companion for Clarissa, who is getting quite old and has now outlasted both of her younger companions. We are not quite sure how she will take to another rabbit due to her age (exact age not known but we think she’s at least 7).

Attached are some photos of Hazel. As my 4 year old son keeps saying, we will keep her in our hearts forever. I hope she’s up there at Rainbow Bridge, running around with Leah and eating as many bananas as she wants.

        RIP Hazel

Love Tim, Ali, Ethan, Ella and Clarissa

Hugs to you. I will light a candle for Hazel so she can cross the rainbow bridge and be whole again.

I’m so sorry you’ve lost your Hazel, she sounds like a very special bunny to your family who will be missed very much. I’ll light a candle also to help light her way.

Ha,ha, that’s a sweet thought…that bunnies can eat as many bananas as they want, once they cross the Bridge. I’ll bet they can, and carrots, and apples…. I’m sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers and thoughts that your family’s grief will pass quickly in to fond sweet memories of Hazel. Hugs to you.

I’m so sorry for you loss. I understand a lot of what you are going through- the house feeling bit empty and not sure what to do about getting another buddy for an older bunny left behind. Time will tell. No need to rush. Just give lots of love and attention to Clarissa right now. And your 4 year old son is right — they will stay in our hearts forever. Binky Free Hazel!

Awww, what a sweet little bunny.  I’d like to think she left to keep your father-in-law company.  Give Clarissa lots of kisses from me and my Rosy.
