Today I found something really weird on my bunny and I don’t know what it can be and would really appreciate if someone can help me..She was just laying down when I saw that she had a red mark on her leg..I have no clue what it is but I’m a really scared that its something bad and need to take her the vet. I will do if any of you guys suggest to but I want to know what it is and what caused it and of course if there is anything I can do to prevent this. I attached a photo a photo and hope I can get some answers soon.

        Thanks in advance.

I would take her to a vet just to get it checked but make sure it’s a rabbit savvy vet. She could have got snagged on something when she was running. I just looked back at the photo, is the red mark on her hock or is it above her hock? She could have sore hocks that a vet could treat with silver sulfadizine cream

I have difficulties understanding from what angle the pic is taken. Is it her hock (foot sole) that has the wound or is it more like her ankle?

If it’s her ankle I’d clean it with betadine, inspect it closely, and if it looks like a scrape wound and theres no swelling etc, I’d put on some triple antibiotic cream or fucidine cream. I’d do wound care twice a day until it has healed.

If its underneath her foot it’s more complicated and she should see a vet. Sore hocks is, as Bunny House says, a serious condition in a rabbit.

Sorry I know the picture is not very good…I had to resize it because the file was too big and but I got a better one attached to this. I had to leave for work and was unable to get back to you before because I wasn’t 100%where it was at but my brother has confirmed that it’s on her ankle which is good but now i have to do what you suggested .

However, she doesn’t like to be picked up or anything like that only pet. I have been very patient with her and letting her come to me which she does. She lays next to me on her own and sometimes goes on my back to lay down but I haven’t cut her nails in months because of the issue that she doesn’t allow me.. any tips for me ? She hates when I try to pet her paws or grab them so I can cut her nails..she hates getting groomed which any type of brush because I have tried over 5 different kind

Thank you so much for responding! I really appreciate any help that I can get. I have only been a bunny mom for less than a year and I have a ton more to learn. The red mark is on her ankle. Would you suggest still taking her to the vet?

It looks like sore hocks to me. Is she a Rex? she looks very Rex like in the photo. While treating the hocks you can have the vet trim her nails too. I’ve always taken my boys to the vet for nail trims because they won’t cooperate with me. My vet charges $20 for a trim, but some might do it for cheaper. If her nails are too long it will cause mobility issues for her and can cause her to cut herself. A good rule of thumb is a nail trim every 3 or so months.

My friend was told she was a Netherland Dwarf when she bought her from the pets store. Thank you! I will go ahead and make an appointment to have her checked out and get the her nail trim.

That’s a cutie Netherland dwarf if I’ve ever seen one. I concur with others that a vet visit with a rabbit-experienced vet (very important!) is best to properly assess the wound and see what can be done to ensure it heals well, and potentially speak about causes.

                          Hi

Quinn had this when we first got him, we put softer things for him to walk ok and used E45 Cream (suggested by the vet) it cleared up in a week or 2. From what the vet said to me, if you catch it early and treat it well it doesn’t cause to many problems. I check Quinn once a week to make sure he hasn’t got any and touch wood he hasn’t had one since

I have a complete care package with my vet which gives me 2 free nail clippings a year which I use and then pay for more which is around £7. Quinn has white nails so it would be easy for me to do them myself but he doesn’t like being faffed with I have to bunny burrito him for the vet to do it.
