Chamois Litter Alternative?

Ruby doesn’t spend too much time in her litter box and has never nibbled on any litter or blanket that was put in the box before. Lately she’s been peeing outside of her box as soon as the “yesterdays news” litter that I am currently using has ANY pee soaked into it.

I just bought the litter screens to put on top, and am hoping that will help. I’m just wondering, it’s much cheaper but would like to know first if it would be SAFE for her if I replaced the paper litter with a chamois underneath the screen? I don’t like putting just newsprint because that she will eat (and she will eat a lot!) and the blankets just aren’t soaking up enough.

You mean to use it instead of litter? If that’s the plan, I would think there would be a problem with a urine smell. If it’s going to be under the screen and she has no way to get to it, it really can’t hurt if you want to try, though.

Yeah I think that would be an issue, plus do you want to put it in your washing machine?

IF you put a screen over, there should be no issue using newsprint-you can toss it daily so there is no smell.

How old is your bunny and is she spayed yet?

For washing, I rinse them in the sink before putting them in my washing machine, so I find it no different than washing a blanket or something that she’s soiled. Yes she’s been spayed, and she’s just over a year old

Also, I am finding that I am actually having LESS of an odor problem with the chamois that I bought. She also has no interest in trying to get to them through the screen.

I have found that the Aspen pellets wick away moisture the best, with no odor, and with a layer of aspen shavings on top of that there is very little room for urine spots. Sammy loves it.

I’m just thinking that washing out anything daily for the next 10 years is going to get old fast. I hope the screen works.

The Aspen pellets are not so good for bunnies who already spend time nibbling – I used to use them and Ruby would spend more time eating that than eating her hay. Not so nutritious. When they spend a lot of time eating it and it wicks a lot, it’s better to avoid it as it won’t be good for their stomachs (I consulted my vet on this when she recommended trying the Yesterday’s News).

Sir Thumpsey – I didn’t buy the Sham Wow brand, I bought them from a seller on Ebay. I got the regular kitchen ones, not the heavy duty. I had to change her litter almost every day, not because it was full but because of the smell, and with the chamois I can leave them 3 days. It cost me $35 to buy $30 of them where the Sham Wow that I had found would have cost the same for half. She also seems to have no problem with the screen. I washed all of the shammys once before using any just to be safe but she doesn’t seem to be at all interested in eating it or even nibbling.
