Low cost spay/neuter clinics in the High Desert?

 hello everybody! does anybody know any low cost clinics in the high desert area or even the areas close to it? the cheapest i could find was a couple of vets charging $100 for neuter. nothing less than that. i would appreciate all the help

$100 isn’t bad –  that was the cost my local humane society was asking, however

I was able to find something better w the help of  another member here…(hopefully

you will get some help with that too..) Floppy’s vet was asking 300.00 for him be

neutered…so yeah I won’t be able to help you with finding something low cost but

OK I plead stupidity, what is the "High Desert Area?" I’m a western gal and that terminology is new to me. Arizona? New Mexico? California? or….? Your profile does not say.  Oh and by the way, welcome!

 ahahahah! thanks scarlet rose! i have actually been a member for a little while but, don’t have many posts. high desert is the area in southern california that’s close to las vegas i would say. it includes areas like barstow, victorville, apple valley, hesperia, adelanto, etc. i actually booked an appointment on this vet out here for $100, tomorrow morning. i got my 2 mini-lop bunnies 3 months ago, both of them was "supposedly" females but, unfortunately one grew up to be a boy… now i’m facing a potential pregnancy as i realized the deal kind of late.. hopefully, i’ll find good homes for the babies.. thanks everybody for your posts

I was actually going to comment that $100 sounds reasonable. I know that some low cost spay neuter clinics may be half of that, but not all are rabbit savvy enough. You want to make sure that any vet you go to is rabbit savvy enough as neutering/spaying a rabbit is different than a cat and dog. And I’m not saying cheap AND rabbit savvy can’t go hand and hand, just make sure that you also make your decision based on a vet that has tons of experience on rabbits. This is soooooo important. For example, if your vet says to fast your bunny prior to surgery – run the other way.

well, actually the nurse at the vet’s told me she was going to call me on monday & arrange the new date so… just waiting for the call

i’m so excited!! we just got back from this animal hospital i found out here, where they perform low cost neuter. finally, peanut got neutered and guess for how much.. $40!! they actually charge $50-$75 depending on bunny size but, i guess mine was even below that! lol! but, i’m mostly excited about the staff and the vet. he seemed like he did a great job and peanut is bright and with an appetite! they put him a collar though, so, that he doesn’t lick on or bite the stiches [which by the way are the dissolvable ones]. they told me to keep them on for 5 days..? is that correct? anyway, this is the update! can’t wait to get nutmeg spayed now! lol! the cheapest price i found on spaying was $140. they are only 4 months old so, i guess she can wait a little bit more

honestly, I’ve never seen a rabbit with a collar for post neuter surgery.   They usually don’t do that to rabbits.   So they want you to keep the collar on the rabbit for five days?  Or were you talking about the stitches – you just keep them on until they come off.   Well, I really don’t feel comfortable going against your vets advice.  This is just not the way I have seen it done UNLESS, a bunny starts in on it, but over the years, seeing so many recently spayed and neutered rabbits, I can tell you I have only seen one have to wear a collar. 

Did anyone else have to have a collar for their bunny? 

Spaying is much more complicated and so please be sure that this vet also knows what they are doing and have the experience to spay a bunny before you have nutmeg spayed.  It’s not the same as cats and dogs.

I am glad that peanut is doing so well….YEAH!!! The fact that he has an appetite already is good news! Just make sure he is pooping too.

The cone strikes me as a little strange too.  We have had one bunny that I know of use one, a female who kept ripping out her stitches and getting herself infected (ouch!)  What about his cecals?  If he has on a collar, he cannot eat them, right?

yes, he poops, too. i help him with the food a little bit because he seems to struggle. and no, he can’t eat his cecals, osprey. he can’t touch them at all-lol. and like i said binkybunny, the vet suggested i shouldn’t remove the cone [not the stitches] for 5 days. i have read that it could be kept for a couple of days but, not 5. i really don’t know. you think i should remove it and see how he does without it? i don’t know. maybe i’ll leave it for at least a couple of days. we’ll see..

Well, I am not advising you to go against your vet, but just to do what you think is best. Maybe you can take it off when you are around so you can watch him and then judge for yourself when you see how he does.

Please remember too that the male can still impregnante a female for up to 30 days after his neuter – once the female is spayed pregnancy is not an issue though. So please consider this and don’t put them together right away after his neuter. That’s really why it’s better to get the female spayed first if you have a male/female pair.

oh i know sarita you are right. it is just that financially i couldn’t support the spay right now so, i did the next best thing, you know what i mean? i keep that in mind though, for sure

the collar seems odd to me as well, and is not something normal. Cheaper isn’t better when it comes to care of your pets. I would be very cautious about having your female bun spayed there, since spaying is a much more invasive and complicated procedure. You want to ask some questions first – like how many successful spays they complete each year.

I’d also be extremely careful as Sarita mentioned, since even though they might be housed separately, I’ve heard of buns getting pregnant through bars!

 oh yea definitely. i wasn’t really considering doing the spay there anyway. they actually charge $150 for it and after peanut was neutered i found another clinic that seems more rabbit savvy and they charge $140 for spay. so, i’ll probably go with that. thank you all for your advice
