So Theodore has decided to train for the olympics it would seem this year – his event will be the high jump!

He has jumped out of his pen a few times this week – he is only in his pen at night while we’re sleeping to protect our furniture mainly! I’ve ordered him a new pen with 1m high sides (try scaling that little one ) but it won’t be arriving until the 8th December unfortunately.

No major drama really until he escaped last night, managed to open (HOW?!) the drawer of his stack of drawers with all his bunny things in – get out his Protexin pro fibre probiotics (in a big 800g tub), chew the lid off and proceed to eat about 1/2 the contents. He was still munching like a crazed animal when I came down to feed him this morning – enter angry mummy shouting and desperately trying to stop him eating anymore.

Some of you will remember that the reason I even have these probiotics is because Theo’s tummy has been unwell for the last 6 months with bouts of inappetence and gas and 2 serious bouts of stasis. He has been really healthy for the last little while so I’m just hoping this doesn’t set him back.

Any advice anyone? What can I do? Do I need to consult the vet or will he be fine? Below is a list of ingredients

        Additives:
        Zootechnical Additives
        Protexin probiotic
        Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CNCM I-4407) 4b1702
        1 x 1010 CFU/kg; 1 x 107 CFU/g

        Technological Additives
Preplex prebiotic – Acacia (Gum arabic)

        Composition:
Wheat feed, Soya bean hulls, Oat feed, Wheat bran, Grass meal, Sugar beet pulp, Brewers’ yeast, Linseed, Cellulose, Preplex prebiotic (Fructo-oligosaccharide)

          Hope he’s ok

Height-wise, 1m wouldn’t keep Pippi or Gina in!

I hope it keeps Theodore in – his current one is only 0.6m and it has taken him a year to learn how to scale that.. He’s never really been a jumper before! I’m doubting myself now.. the highest one I could find was 1.2m.. maybe should’ve ordered it instead

We needed 1.2m, and Gina is quite a small bun! Can you ring the supplier and ask to upgrade before its despatched

With all those probiotics, he should be in tip-top shape now right?! In all seriousness though, I do hope he is ok, I’m not sure on what eating alarge amount would do to his tummy.

A 1m pen wouldn’t have kept Bandit in either. In fact he jumped on top of the pen at 1m height one day while I was standing next to it, scared the life outta me. My current pair have about a 60cm pen, for whatever reason they’re happy to stay in it. Though occasionally I see one of them standing by the edge and periscoping up to look at the top of the fence. Cheeky bunnies, just biding their time and lulling me into a false sense of security.

My girl is also an escape artist. I planned to keep her in an xpen she had other plans. She now a free range bunny

                    Yep. My Chewie as well

Not sure about impact of so much probiotic, but I’m hoping his tum will be in top shape (((Theo Houdini)))

Thankfully he’s fine – never seen such perfect poops maybe I should feed him an entire tub of probiotics more often! haha I joke, of course.

He wasn’t too pleased about being locked in his old hutch last night, and I felt so bad I know it is totally not fair for him to spend all night in a hutch but I’m so scared he’s going to injure himself jumping out of his pen. The new one will hopefully arrive this week – I was too late to change the height to 1.2m but we’ll try the the 1m one and see how we go. Hopefully it works as it was £68.

I’m so glad he is ok!!!

                        I’ll just leave this here…

So, I accidentally left the foot stool by the rabbit pen, Frank saw his opportunity and took it!
I was lying in bed and was lying on my side putting my phone on charge and I felt movement on the bed, I didn’t think anything of it as I have felt that a few times at night since Little Red died
I roll onto my back, iPad in hand ready to stick a film on and there he was, the devil bunny. Stood with his front paws on my tummy looking at me as if to say “Look what I did mummy”.

LOL! AxGizmo – what a little tinker!! I have a similar set up to yours at night – we have a hutch within an x-pen too and i think the bars we currently have are around the same height as yours. I suspect Theo is escaping in the same manner! So the new x pen I have ordered is larger and I’m going to do away with his hutch completely I think.

LOL – go Frankie !! And poor Cinders looking on, almost looking back at the bunnycam saying, “did you get that on film?! Did you?!?”

Definitely put NOTHING next to the xpen grids, it’s unlikely (oh ho ho) they’ll jump straight over with nothing to jump up on and nothing to jump on to… atleast the first time! (Once they get a taste for freedom, you’re DONE FOR !!! Bwahh ha haaaa ! )

Theo £68?!! – goodness gracious… I hope they’re coated in gold! No I jest, that it how much the shops charge over here. but I went down the amazon road for mine which is Easipet XL pen (107cm) £26.
But as they have drop pins to join the gates, it’s great for outside (pins goes into earth) but you have to cable-tie them to something indoors (me = kitchen table) to give them strength against a rabbits mouth pulling and pushing the bars…) I went safe with the XL a107cm and am glad that I did…. There is no way they would free jump over it (nothing either side), but Henry did try a corner climb once as he could spy the kitchen table as a landing point just over the top (he threw himself at it like Spiderman), but gave up half way up (with me giving him a stern NO!).
I overlap two of the grids to strengthen the middle of the distance and use this part as a gate for me to get through holding the two together with strong DIY pegs. (a tad high to straddle over! ) – the clip/pegs are easy to open and close as I am forever going to and fro.

(Well that turned out to be a long post, I was just going to say “LOL, go Frankie go !!” )

I’m so glad I ended up with an apartment with a window alcove as the pen and cage are perfect there.

Haha, he is the devil bun honestly. Certainly keeps me on my toes. He’s never tried it when the footstool isn’t there (thank god!!) if I didn’t have bunnycam i imagine it would have been a long night trying to figure out how he got out.

I thought the same about Cinders when I was watching it Vienna. So glad I got it on video haha

Ah but he jumps onto the cage no prob (was it the cage?), so now he’ll jump up and over, footstool or no footstool !!
(Or atleast he now knows the correct road to take !! )

I deliberately got the tunnel and the tent because they have pointed tops that won’t provide a step up and out (i hope).

Some people have had success stretching a sheet across the top of the pen and clamping it down in many places along the xpen top.

Ah Vienna! I’ve been extorted! lol the pen I ordered is from amazon too. This one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doggy-Style-Playpen-Whelping-MEDIUM/dp/B01B4Z1KYO/ref=pd_lpo_199_tr_img_3?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=89AT2Y718ECGG49DX87D&th=1 in the large size – it looks very sturdy at least as Theo likes to drag his pen around our nice tiled floor and there are some scores from that. And the door will help if I need to climb in for anything. According to tracking it’s going to arrive today – I so hope so!!

He lives in the corner of our kitchen, it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to having a pen only instead of a hutch and pen. He loves the shelf in his hutch poor Theo.

Trying a ‘lid’ on the pen is the next step if he goes houdini on us again RabbitPam

Ah yes Theo, I saw a similar one in a video about bonding and it looked as if it was much sturdier (and heavier) than my barriers (imagine an oven shelf XXXL) LOL

Henry and Zou both love laying as high as they can (Henry on his dog cage shelf and Zou up on the 2nd floor of her condo)… so if the pen is up against a wall you could always put a table or shelf or something so he can climb up and lay down and look at his kingdom…just so long as it’s not used as a stepping stone to freedom !!

Could you put the hutch up on a table so it’s too high for him to jump up on the roof?
I have a hutch on a hutch on a table, with holes in bottom of hutches, and in tops tso the holes join up!!) and they have access into the (closed door) hutches but can go up and have a sleep in it

PS – I would swap my xpen for the more expensive whelping pen if it meant it could be freestanding and not be tied to anything to prevent “Jaws” throwing it around !! I’ll be interested to hear your review on it

I’m interested to hear about that pen too! I’m still searching for the right option in my studio (sewing) for Amelia. I can’t bunny proof that area enough to be safe for her to be free run, and she just escapes her other area of the house to be with me. Her current pen in there she moves everywhere, or just hops out of ?

So the pen arrived Yippee! I don’t have to worry about Houdini getting his leg caught or something while scaling his old pen anymore.

As far as the pen goes I’m delighted! Yes it was pricey but seriously good quality. So sturdy, Theo, who is normally a pen dragger, lifter and biter can’t shift it at all and the bottom is rubber lined to stop it scratching my lovely tiles. This is the 1m high one and I think it will keep Theo in for sure as long as he has nothing to climb up on to leap. This is the 6-panel one but there is an 8 panel one if you want more room. This is grand for Theo as it’s literally a bed for him at night. Over all really impressed and Theo seems to love it!

Oh man, I need this for my bun, she jumps out almost every night! (It doesn’t help that she is now as tall as her current pen when she stands up on her back feet to beg for things lol she can hop it from a standstill)

We are worried she will jump/climb a taller one anyway and hurt herself on the way down, has anyone had any experience with climbers? She does jump, but as long as she can get her front paws over she does a bit of a scramble to get the rest up and over.

I love that saying Vienna! It’s very true – as long as he doesn’t manage to escape this pen I’m hopeful we’ll never have to replace it – or at least for a long time!

Winter, how tall is her current pen? My old one was 60cm and Theo had learned he could easily jump over it. He hasn’t even tried to escape this one. They do x-pen’s up to 120cm (that’s the tallest I’ve found) and I really don’t think any rabbit would be able to scale that without something to jump up on to first. The other option would be getting a pen with a ‘lid’ – my old x pen came with a lid which fitted on when it was in a hexagonal shape or you could just try clothes pegging a sheet or similar over the pen.

I was just this minute checking my emails, Henry is out of cage to stretch his paws, cage door left open, swinging on its hinges so he can jump in and out.
Xpen grids have been put on top of cage (to heighten it) as he’s already popped up on the top of the cage without any effort….!

And suddenly, he jumps up on the OPEN cage door (swinging !!!!) back paws on the really thin top bar (ouch!) with front paws held out and upwards leaning on the xpen grids, sniffing and checking out how his next move could get him over the xpen grids !!!

Goodness me ! Camera was on table, but by the time I turned it on, he’d realised his tight-rope balancing wouldn’t last too long, and very clumsily turned around and. fell off !!!!

@Theo. What is the update on your barriers. Are they still unmovable ? And are you still over the moon with them?

Yes I’m still totally over the moon! Such a good investment – the bars haven’t moved an inch and Theo hasn’t been able to/doesn’t even seem to have tried to scale them! Consequently he’s much more settled in his new home – he seems to really like it. The door opens right up to the top of the gate which is so handy too as I can climb into his pen with him rather than trying to break my neck stepping over the gates

That’s really good to hear (and for us others to know about….)
