Please help. We brought home our new baby last Sunday and she is almost 9 weeks old now. She is not our first bun, but this is new to me. We brought her home a week ago, and yes we now know the food I was feeding is different then what the breeder was feeding. However, she was fine Sunday-Thursday. Friday I could smell her poop! IT is terrible !!!! and her cage was covered in what looked like cluster poops but it was all over !!!! Our breeder suggested it was the food change. In the mean time.. my niece who also has a bun from there, spent the entire first day with our bunny at our house in the same cage had the same issue on wednesday! The breeder treated her with three doses of meds for gi upset thinking it was the food change. So my niece and I both switched the food to the food the breeder feeds, with the medicine and the new food, my nieces rabbit was back to normal… until today…. AND IT STINKS! Our rabbit is going to see the breeder today, and is also eating the same food the breeder feeds and has for a few days now… what do you think this could be????? I REALLY dont think it is the food at this point!

Could be the move from being with mummy bun to living on their own; moving to a new environment is always stressful. Sounds like cecotropes if they’re clustered and wet, they’re supposed to eat them so it is a bit alarming that they’re being left.

Unfortunately… you’ve also been changing the food to something new and then back again to the old food so this could be causing the upset too. I would try and let the bunnies settle, maybe darken the cage with a blanket and make sure they’re in a quiet area. x Wish you the best with the bunnies.

            Possibly coccidia at this age.
Do you know the name of the med the breeder gave your neice’s rabbit?

Can you give a description of their diet? Including both the food you were giving and the breeders food. Are they both getting unlimited hay? I’d so, what type of hay?

It was the food here I had been using for my other bunny… and then I realized it wasn’t the food we fed when we brought him home either! … She is now just eating timothy hay and regular pellets, she was eating the martins original and when I checked the back it was alfafa pellets. She always has lots of hay available.

Also, the poops are totally normal by the afternoon and into the evening!

Thanks for your response. I am hoping that is all it is! She truly is the sweetest little thing! …  We are giving her the same food the breeder feeds and I believe its a timothy pellet, and the hay is timothy hay also. The food I was feeding was Martins and now that I have looked at the back of the bag it was an alfalfa pellet! I’m sure that was what the issue was!  She was fine in the late afternoon and evenings, but the mornings and early part of the day it was a mess and smelly Now tonight she seems great! Drinking lots, eating both hay and some of her pellets! NOW another thing I did notice was that she was really pigging out on the pellets! She is not eating like that now that we have switched! She is eating tho!

My first thought is cecal overproduction as well. Being stressed, having food changed, etc. can cause this. A rich diet can also cause excess cecals, which is common in young bunnies since they are often fed alfalfa hay and pellets.

I will second Jersey, can you tell us what his diet is exactly? What are the pellets and what kind of hay is he getting? Does he get anything else, like treats?

Jersey is right, coccidia is something that you need to keep an eye out for with young bunnies. It’s easily spread when bunnies are housed close together (like at breeders) and there is an incubation period.

Thanks everyone!!! Phoebe is doing great! Nine weeks old today! No more issues, so I am sure that it was the stress of the move, and the new food! I feel terrible!!!! BUT she has settled in nicely … her cage is much neater and no longer stinks! Thanks everyone for your help! I was feeding martins and when I looked at the back it was alfalfa not timothy. I am now only feeding her timothy pellets and timothy hay… she is doing very well… I may try and add the alfalfa hay back in but not yet. Does that sound right ?

Young rabbits can do fine on just timothy based pellets and timothy hay. I recall a member here whose dwarf rabbit couldn’t cope with alfafa. She thrived on just timothy from a young age.
Really great you were able to remedy this with a simple diet change. I hope your niece has the same success her rabbit.

Thank you! And yes her little one is the exact same! Although took her longer to come back to normal. She had changed the food but not the hay! We are so blessed because my aunt has a farm and supplies all of our hay for very little! I had picked up a bag of alfalfa thinking she would need it, but we will leave it out for now   She is a pure delight ! just love her!
