        Hello everyone,

I have a 3 months old bunny (dont know yet if he or she) and we’re having air conditioning installed in a couple of days. I know that there will be some wall drilling involved (I asked the guy who came to planifiy the installation) – they said the loud noise will be around 30 minutes. Since I read that rabbits are very sensitive to loud noises (may even die if scared), and since even us humans dont really enjoy when neighbours drill in their homes , I was wondering if it’s safe that I keep the rabbit in another room (since i live in a very small apartment, I dont have a room thats FAR from the construction area, so there will still be lots of noise) or should I take him out of the appartment and into the garage?

Thanks for all your input in advance!

When I had to do noisy stuff, if it doesnt happen in the rabbit’s room, I leave his pen closed and check on him every now and then. If the work has to be done close to his space, I move his bed to another room and lock him there, so that he can go hide somewhere familiar if he wants to.

            Thanks for your answer Muchelle.

What I was planning to do, is to put him in a big cardboard box with plenty of holes for air and some paper inside or something (in case he pees). This was in the case that I would move him in the garage (the garage is at the -1 level of the building, so it should be a proper temperature, maybe even chiller than inside the apartment). As to your answer, I could move him in the bathroom , with his cage, he has a hidey house inside the cage (usually I let him roam around the main room of the apartment when we’re home -even at night – and he has his another hidey place behind the couch ). I also read that rabbits do not like if their house is moved , thats why I dont know if moving him with the cage in another room would be good or not.

I may be overreacting with all the stress about this, but I would rather have him as confortable as possible for the 30 minutes of loud noise.

Muchelle , when you say ‘noisy stuff’ ..how noisy is that? I mean, he has no problem when the washing machine is working (unfortunattely due to the limited space I’m currently living in, I have to keep him in the living room which has the kitchen included). But from what I can remember, when drilling into concrete walls, it’s a whole other level of noise

My bun had to survive to a wide arrange of noises XD first of all when we hammered his pen together (he didn’t like that at all because we weren’t doing it rhytmically, so he couldn’t anticipate the next bang maybe?).

Lately I have installed some shelves in the room adjacent to where he sleeps, so I have been drilling for a while because my place has thick stone walls. I’ll tell you he didn’t care at all: he got startled when I made the first hole because of the sudden noise, but then he’s been minding his own business. On that occasion I had “invited” (read: shooed) him to the terrace so that he wouldn’t hear much noise, but he walked straight back in when he heard the drilling… I don’t get him sometimes. He also doesn’t care for fireworks or louder tv/gaming noises.

You’d think my rabbit is super brave at this point… sadly his weaknesses are the vacuum cleaner and the hair-dryer

Since your bun is so young, I think that moving him to the bathroom would be the best solution because you won’t be moving him very far and it’ll take you a second to return him back to his usual spot once everything is done and cleaned. He won’t mind that you move his house because he’s very young and he will feel safe because the cage is his familiar territory.

Thanks once again Muchelle for your input !

Sounds like your bunny has had the chance to become very noise-experienced As for the vacuum cleaner and hairdryer … we all have our weaknesses

It is quite strange how they behave related to noises, mine is not bothered (so much) by the sound of the washing machine, but gets a little bit startled by the BEEP the fan does when I turn it on/off …

Unfortunately, I didnt get to read your message since after the work was done (maybe due to time-zone difference? I’m in France). What I did was take it one step at the time:first i moved him into the bedroom with his cage , but he was already uncomfortable (hiding in his hidey-house in the cage) from the talking and the movement of the workers. I asked the worker to test drilling and checked his reaction, of course was panic and running back into his hidey-house (he was not even coming out for his favorite crackers !!!! and that’s unseen before! ) … Then I tried to move him into the box I had prepared for him but he wouldn’t come out so I moved him into the bathroom, and then picked him up and put him in the box, and took him down into the garage, into the car with the windows open a little bit. Overall, I dont think it was a very pleasant experience for him but I tend to believe he was better off in the garage without any noise , and in lower temperatures.

He took a little bit to re-adapt when I brought him back , but I think and hope that right now he’s almost ‘good as old’ At least now he can enjoy some air conditioning in the room, that should do him good (I know it does to me! &nbsp

I hope that soon he will come back to 100% of his regular self – he usually runs away when petted but sometimes stays for a while, now its a little bit worse I will see if he comes up on the bed to wake me up tomorrow morning at 6 AM as usual  . That would be a sign he’s BACK

                Once again, thanks !!!

ahah from Italy here! I just reply at weird times, I suppose…

When anything out of the ordinary happens (vet, guests, house cleaning, etc) I’ve noticed it always takes 40 mins/1 hour for my bun to re-adapt to his surroundings… it’s his territory after all He also acts all moody and pissy for a while, just to make extra-sure to let me know that no one has the right to mess with HIS stuff. For example, after I sweep his cage he always checks that everything is still there and marks everything again…

Haha , I would have never thought it !

Well, I would say mine took about 2 days to fully get back to his usually safe – I’m actually having the impression that he/she has become more friendly after all this. But I noticed he gets startled a little bit more easier (at least in the last 2 days) by small noises – as opposed to , last night, when there were fireworks at the sea shore , which you can hear from where I live , but he didn’t even move a muscle …was not bothered at all…

As far as it goes for rearranging, cleaning his cage, I would say mine does about the same…maybe even quicker (to readapt). I actually had some friends once here, they came to see him, I was thinking he will run and hide in the deepest corner of the house but no…he came out and started sniffing them …who would have guessed he’s such a good host

He’s a little guy, so he’s probably still too aware that he’s a prey (and you’re a predator xD)… he’ll forget it pretty soon when he’ll be completely comfortable and a bit bigger!
On first introduction to my friends, the little idiot watched us from afar for a few hours, then he came out and started circling around my cousin’s boyfriend feet. Which was very strange because he was afraid of males and would only accept females…. then he proceeded to have sex with his costly, new shoes.

I’m gonna sound like a parent now, but they do grow up fast! I remember 2 months ago when he was such a small ball of fur

I don’t want to sound too optimistic, but I think I’ve passed the ‘predator’ phase, now I may be in the ‘strange looking tall rabbit who feeds me’

I’ve read about the circling thing, mine doesn’t do that yet…he does do something similar in the morning, when he wakes me up and I painfully move towards his feeding area

Regarding your cousin’s boyfriend shoes…I would say better some humping than some chewing  The wallpaper on my walls did not have that option..it was chewing from the start!

By the way, looking to the photo of your bunny , I tend to see a certain resemblance between him and mine.Do you know what kind of bunny yours is?

Hehe, mine does the circling dance only before he humps something or before he gets his daily pellets. He did chew through my sofa cover, my rugs and my wall when he was a little furball. Now he’s all grown up and at least stopped minding the wall =.=””””

Yeah, they look alike! Their little faces are identical
I wouldn’t know what kind of bunny he is… my vet has doubts he is even a pure dwarf because his ears are small, but he is big (50cms long x 2kgs, which is about the size of a standard italian meat rabbit). He was bought from a shop as a 2 months toy sized dwarf (not by me, I am against buying animals. He was an unwanted present I received without notice) but in reality he was 4 months and his feet were huge already XD

I would love to know *what* he is and if he’s half of any breed though… the only interesting feature that Kuro has to this regard might be his fur: each hair is pure black on the top and gradually becomes blue-gray towards the root (he looked dark-blue when he was a baby), then he has a very fluffy angora-like grey underfur that he sheds periodically for obvious reasons. Is the fur of your bun similar? Maybe even if not pure breed they might be half-something that we can track down.

I guess it would be easier to open a separate thread on the forum and post their pictures, but hey it’s summer and I’m bored! Do drop me a private message if you feel like playing sherlock holmes with me and Kuro

Michelle and Nivde, your twin bunnies just became quadrupled lol! The up-eared bunny, BunBun in my avatar was an “overgrown” dwarf with 2 inch ears, and his successor, Luke, is the same size and nearly identical to the rest of our bunnies. They might be part Polish rabbit- there are two types of Polish rabbits from different countries and I think one type looks a lot like our rabbits ☺. Google them and see what you think!

EDIT: omg the polish ones look so similar! Also the Havana breed (from which the polish comes from) is similar D:

@Dee Do you happen to have a larger size image of your avatar? It’s too small (at least for me) to see anything clearer (or maybe I need glasses )

I checked out some photos of Polish rabbits and Havana rabbits : regarding the Polish breed – mine has longer ears , as for the Havana breed, the ears are a match but not the fur type.

There’s some more photos of Jasper (ears included )

( last one is named: The Pellets Beggar )

@Muchelle So i guess the dance at 6 AM is for the pellets Food time ! Me, I had to cover the wall behind the couch with some cardboard …now he’s chewing and pulling on that…but thats easily replaceable , I got a whole roll of cardboard

Regarding the size…I would say he is about 30-40 cm when stretched with his legs behind , and I have no ideea about the wheight yet. I still have to take him to a vet, didn’t yet do it. Hope to find a good one around here.

I guess we could start a new thread if we want to investigate about our rabbits genealogy tree Dee already provided some starting points

                                  Muchelle,
Yes, this would be fun to figure out who our bunnies ancestors may be! I forgot about Havanas!! Definitely a contender- I was convinced BunBun was a Havana until I saw the Polish bunnies.

Nivde, Jasper is adorable!!! He looks a lot like my bunny Lukie, except Jasper has bigger ears. I will try to upload some bigger photos, plus some of Lukie and Precious, my current bunnies.

BunBun, my bridge bunny, was definitely a dwarf that got too big. He had tiny 2inch long ears, little paws and that “bullet shaped” face when you viewed him from the side. Lukie looks like he might be a small regular size bunny or a dwarf mixed with a big bunny. He has bigger ears than BunBun, a square muzzle opposed to Bun’s round one, and much bigger paws, especially the rear paws. He’s about the same size, though- about 4 lbs (approx 1.75 kg). He was 3.5 lbs when I got him, but he’s put on a bit of weight lol. Very greedy little thing, as most rabbits are! I should talk- I live for food ?.

About noise. I imagine there’s a lot of variation between rabbits. Our two Flemish rabbits don’t seem to be fussed by the vacuum cleaner. Also, the Fourth of July fireworks didn’t bother them although it did bother the neighbors dogs. Years ago, Bunny was in the kitchen which faces our back yard. I started up an automobile that didn’t have mufflers and Bunny did not like that sound! She ran at full speed into the bedroom and hid under the bed.

I think this was the shortest investigation ever lol as you can see my rabbit’s ears are a LOT less big than Jasper, Lukie and BunBun, but their bodies and faces are certainly from the same family XD (Well at least I know Kuro’s not the result of a total orgy…)

Flemishwhite, when we were go on holiday we go to this very rural area and fireworks for the 15th of August are fired from the field neighbouring our property. Kuro never gave a damn about it, even when he was a baby. When I realized where they were firing off, I ran home sure to find him dead but he was just lounging around licking his butt.

He’s also deadly scared by farts. That’s one human noise he can’t wrap his tiny brain around!

Flemishwhite: Indeed, we have fireworks here from july until late august (it’s a yearly contest); although they are quite far away from my house (like 20 minutes walk), you can very well hear them (I’m talking about big fireworks like New Years not the ones regular people buy/use). But Jasper didn’t seem bothered during the last 2 shows. But, he was really panicked when I asked the workers to test the drilling, to see his reaction. Also, he is startled every time I operate the air conditionner’s remote and there’s a BEEP

Muchelle: I was thinking about that…the size of Kuro’s ears…but I thought maybe it’s the perspective of the photo. I took a look at BunBun (on Dee’s profile) and he does look a lot like ours – more like yours with the white spot on the nose. But the ears look more like Jasper’s…I guess it will be even more difficult to find out what the 2 parents were (if they were different breeds) …
