Blue is a 8-month old New Zealand Blue. He weighs about four pounds and was sold to us by a breeder who sold rabbits for you-know-what. He is doing the dead bun flop but lifted his head when I stuck my hand in the cage.

So what is up with his size? Is he supposed to be this small? He is smaller than the REWs at a local shelter, so is he a normal size? I really don’t care how big he is, but is he healthy at this size?

Hmm. Maybe a smaller bunny got in there with mom? Hehe!

Honestly, he could just be a small individual. Considering this was a farming operation, it’s likely the bloodlines aren’t “pure”. Sometimes they will mix some other breeds in there to get certain traits.

Is a NZ Blue the equivalent to a Vienna Blue? It looks like it on the net… Hey!! down under cousin !!

            If so, 2 options :
He’s either not 8 months (if your avatar is a recent photo mine looked like that at 3 months)….
Or as LBJ said maybe a smaller bun was Dad…. sneaky sneaky :!!

I would imagine that if the breeders were breeding for (sshhh) you-know-what…. then they’d go for bigger is better crosses. But I have no idea.

Remember, a 13 lb rabbit eats more and jumps higher ! Enjoy when he’s that size !! LOL

Four pounds is very small, I would have thought even for a runt at 8 months that would be very small for a rabbit that’s supposed to reach about 10-12 pounds as an adult. Bandit only grew to 7 pounds and even he was over 5 pounds at 5 months old. Something’s not quite right if you ask me. Either age (depending how long you’ve had him) or a smaller parent.
