        Hi everyone,

I currently feed my Netherlands dwarf 1/8 cups of pellets in the morning and veggies in the evening. I’ve heard that some people don’t feed pellets at all, or separate the feedings into twice a day. I don’t want to cut out pellets completely as he really loves them (breakfast time is his favourite time!) but I was wondering if it is better to feed twice a day. Any experience? How do you guys feed your bunnies?
Edit: I’ve just realized that this may be in the wrong section, if someone could move this post that’d be great, thanks!

I moved your post to Diet and Care =)

I give my bun pellets, it feels like the safest thing. I feed hay and veg too, but especially in the winter, I’m not sure I can give him as wide a variety of greens to cover all his nutritional needs. So I give a bit of pellets. He gets a little bit in the morning, some during the day as treats (he thinks they’re treats because I hand-feed them), but most of his daily pellets he gets in the evening.

You could just save a few and use as treats during the day or in the evening, in case he’s anything like my Bam, he really loves his pellets.

I give my bunnies 4 tablespoons of pellets between them every morning for their breakfast. I give them veggies at around 7pm. Me and my buns like this routine altho they’d do anything for more pellets! They get very excited when they see me open the pellet cupboard.

My pair get two tablespoons of pellets each, every day. One in the morning, one in the evening. I feed greens around lunch time. I’m with bam that I feed pellets just to insure I’m not missing any vital nutrients in their diet. In addition to that, Luna doesn’t maintain weight particularly well without that little bit of pellets in her diet.

The main reason I feed twice a day is because pellets swell once they get wet, so they’re going to swell in the gut a little. So due to that I like to split the feeding so that they don’t get too much in their stomach at once. I noticed that before I split Bandit’s feeding of pellets, that he used to just lay around afterwards like he’d eaten to much, then when I split his feedings that went away and he remained more active after.

That’s given me some food for thought – perhaps I’ll split my pellets into two feedings!

My buns get breakfast and supper which consists of half their pellet ration, veggies and hay refills. They also get a romaine leaf and a few pellet sprinkles as a bed time snack.

I also feed pellets twice a day. Pepper gets 1 tbsp in the morning 1tbsp at night, she will NOT eat any veggies (tried kale parsley all the lettuces cilantro mint rosemary basil oregano wheat grass so far no luck) so she gets the full two tbsp. Now Lilo gets 1.5 teaspoons in the morning and another 1.5 teaspoons at night. He also gets his veggies at night.

I occasionally also give then a few extra pellets as a treat.

I think everyone will do things slightly differently, as long as what you do works for you and your bun then that’s great. on the advice of our vet we started feeding Bramble only at night when he was young, it was done really to encourage him to eat hay because he was terrible for not eating nearly enough and he has recurring molar spurs which means he really needs a lot of hay so he got his veggies and pellets together at night. We have just continued to do this ever since so both buns get only hay throughout the day and pellets and veg at night. My guys also don’t maintain their weight without pellets – I tried to cut them back a little because it seemed that compared to everyone else I was way over feeding them (even although they were both fine weight wise) and I wondered if too many pellets may be contributing to bramble’s tummy issues so I tried cutting down pellets slightly and increasing veg – they both lost weight, quite a bit actually and the vet told me to go back to what we were doing before, touch wood they have both regained their lost weight and Bramble’s tummy has been ok since too.
