Hey guysi have to store my hay in a plastic container with a lid – the reasons are I have low immunity so mice getting in it would be a risk for me when I handle the hay and other reason is due to other family members having hay fever in our house
We only have a internal access garage to store it – no shed or anything.

        How long will it last?
I brought a big bag this time rather than my normal small ones ( since the small one I was going through over two a week at $10 a pop! Big bag was only $10 and it’s been going two weeks so far and that’s barely made a dent in it)

It’ll keep at least 6 months if stored dry and away from direct sunlight. If the lid is very tight, you should smell the hay now and then to make sure it isn’t getting moldy. Freshly harvested hay isn’t always perfectly dry when you buy it. Any hint of moldy smell and you should throw out the hay.

I store mine in one of the kitchen cupboards, that big annoying one that goes under the corner section of the worktop, and normally ends up with stuff left there out of sight and out of reach. I can fit 20 kg of hey in there (our hay gets delivered in 10 kg bags) and its really handy for cleaning out the hay boxes each morning. All the mess stays in the kitchen and is quickly swept away after.

That would set my lot off sneezing big time… even the small amount in Oakley’s cage starts them off but not as bad as if they went into the garage ( where I store the hay in the container)
Do you know if the hay will last ok in the container? It’s not air right in container and the hay can’t get wet there at all

It the container isn’t air tight and it can’t get wet it should be fine. I store my bales in a wooden blanket box. I sealed around the lid with door seals to prevent bugs getting in but then I also drilled holes and inserted small air vents in three of the sides so that the hay could still breathe and wouldn’t sweat, it’s more likely to sweat in plastic containers which then leads to mould, but out of sunlight it should be ok, depends how fresh the hay is too.
