So… we got a bill of good health from the vet!
He said there are no spurs and no wounds inside the mouth, so the discomfort might be coming either from a small injury coming from eating that’s already healed or simply because Kuro’s teeth are horribly aligned and so they bother him. Right now we’re on strict observation for 2 weeks + low doses of metacam for a few days to eradicate any discomfort.

He’s eating, although he is avoiding a bit the tougher pellets, he’s drinking and he’s pooping fine, but right now I’m freaking out a bit.
Do I keep his diet the same? Do I give him more soft pellets/vegs to keep him munching?

Also, I don’t exactly know how much hay he’s eating because he won’t eat out of a bowl or a hay holder thingie, he likes to have his hay all dumped up in one place so that he can play with it… have any suggestions except taking pictures like a maniac?

Other news is that K is positive to e. cuniculi antibodies markers. He is absolutely not sick, he just came in contact with the thing, probably when he was at the shop. Vet said we’re going to have another blood test done in a few months to see if the antibodies count goes down (and he said it will go down in his opinion), but I’m psyching over this fact too. Just ranting at this point, sorry guys

Good news about the no spurs =)

You could of course give him softer hay, like orchard hay or third/fouth cut hay. It’s really difficult to measure their consumption when they refuse a hay rack, so the next best thing is if course to keep an eye on the poop. Size, color, consistency, crumbleability (yes, I made that word up just now) and amount are all good markers. If a bun eats too little fiber, the poop will be small, very dark and kind of tough (low crumbleability).

I think I’d try to feed him the (healthy) food he wants to eat You can even supplement with Critical Care served on a plate if he eats that. It can be mixed with plain canned pumpkin or veggie baby puree.

Did your vet mention profylaxic treatment with fenbendazole for the e cuniculi? A huge amount of rabbits (some say up to 80%) carry this parasite but never get sick from it. But you can do profylaxic treatment for 9 days every 6 months for rabbits that are confirmed carriers.

Rant away all you like We bun mums tend to take our buns’ health-issues seriously

Poop is perfect, crumbleables (lol) just fine. He did poop a bit less cause yesterday he was SUPER stressed (vet checked his mouth, belly, ears, did his nails and cleaned his butt glands… he was exhausted when he managed to get back to his carrier). And of course he didn’t protest to anything except when vet touched his family jewels. That elicited stern protest

Right now he’s eating the hard pellets I have chopped in half for him.. tomorrow I will check the pet store for other kinds of hay.

I did ask prophylaxis for the e.c. but the vet said he first needed to know what’s the situation’s really like. K’s electrophoresis is clean, only his antibodies are up, so the hypothesis is that he came in contact with it but didn’t “catch” it (if I understood well… I do am a paramedic and have med knowledge but I was SO DAMN stressed)
If the antibodies go down fast enough he’d prefer not to give K meds as yet, if the antibodies won’t go down enough then we’ll give him meds. He assured me that this 2-3 months wait for the next blood test is not going to affect his health… since he already did miracles for K, I’ll believe him on this one.

Really there’s so much going on that I was almost crying when we got to the vet xD this bun always tries to get sick at the worse times in my life

I think I understand, the vet thinks K has been exposed so he’s made antibodies but there are no live disgusting e c parasites in him. That sounds great I hope that’s all there is to it!
Pets do tend to get sick at really impractical times. They seldom do it during office-hours on week days f ex.

And now he’s eating as if he hadn’t seen food for a year. Hopefully he keeps doing that lol

Porridge oats can be good for bun who is, or has been, struggling to eat? Though hopefully now he is eating all his usual things, he doesn’t need them. But maybe worth having in, in case of future need?

never tried them! Thanks for the tip! Right now he’s still stuffing his face and stopped showing signs of discomfort in his mouth. Hopefully there won’t be a next time, but in case I’ll try that

Can you get dried grass? My buns all love it, its softer than hay to eat, but just as good for them?

He has a dried grass home that he’s taking apart little by little. It’s the second one he’s chewing through. I used to give him fresh homegrown grass, but since he hurt himself with wild grass this summer he decided he doesn’t like grass anymore, sigh

I’m late to the party but wanted to say that I understand your anxiety, Muchelle. What bunny mom wouldn’t? And that if this is the same vet we’ve heard so many wonderful things about, I’d trust his approach to the possible E.C. situation (and possibly marry him, as well )

Hugs to you and noserubs and (((vibes))) to your little piglet.

Sadly the dream team of my two vets split up momentarily. The anesthesioligist (main K’s vet until Xmas) left to go do an internship in Dubai and now we “only” have the bunny vet veteran. We were so lucky to find them also if they’re not exactly close-by.

(wouldn’t have minded to ask the anesthesiologist on a date *cough cough*)

Bonus pic of fatty rat falling asleep:

then you have an excellent bun-vet at your disposal xD

I asked if they needed a psychologist to aid the clients but nope no trip for me in Dubai…

Chewie’s vet, now sort of retired, is amazing. I’ve learned so much from her and she’s so gracious about always being available for questions and mommy-worries.

That’s one thing I miss… the away vet is my age, I have his FB and really stuck to me when we were about to lose the bun last year, he called me every so often while the bun was boarding at the hospital and so on.

This other vet has a ton more experience but is older and busier (he’s the boss of the whole hospital) so he’s obviously more detached even if he’s always patient and explains me everything when we’re at the visit.
