        Hi everyone,

I got a new bunny yesterday to bond with my neutered netherland dwarf. She is a 14 week old dutch and so so placid. We cant believe our luck. She is adorable I have afew questions about how to introduce them. They are both in our living room in separate enclosures. Unfortunately i cant place them side by side as the fireplace divides the room so i have them opposite each other less than 2metres apart. This morning I let Henry out and he went straight up to her cage and spent about 10mins rubbing his scent all over the outside of her cage. She was following him everywhere he went sticking her nose out and keeping her head low to the ground. It looked like she wanted him to groom her. He rubbed his chin on her head each time she did this. I noticed he also left lots of dropping along the edge of her enclosure and both rabbits were digging as if they were trying to get in to each other.  Henry didnt seem too bothered by her presence because he started doing laps of the room with plenty of binkies.  im wondering could anyone tell me if these are good indications of how they may get on in the future and what i should do next? i have swapped their teddies around today and Henry is very intrigued by hers but she is ignoring his. I would love to know what all this means. I am guessing that Henry was being abit territorial but at the same time he didnt bite her and was very excited to see her.

i am planning to get Poppy spayed in early January.  She has been doing alot of digging in her cage and i had a fleece in lastnight but she tried to eat it and was vigorously biting holes in it so i took it out. Could these be signs that she is sexually maturing? Not sure whether to introduce them properly before the procedure but my vet nurse said that i should let them out every day for floor time and supervise them very closely.

Any advice on what to do next with my two buns would be much appreciated. xx

your first step… a PICTURE! i am dizzy in anticipation of what this little Poppy looks like… lol!!!

chances are the chewing and digging is just normal young bunny behavior, but i would not be surprised if within the next month or so you started to see more sexually mature behavior. you could let them out together for supervised playtime. i would still try and introduce them slowly. interactions betw/ the cages are not always a very good indication of what they will be like face to face with no barriers.

i don’t remember if you mentioned before, but Henry has been neutered for over one month, right? they can still impregnate a female up to a month post-neuter… so i just want to make sure you’re out of the danger zone. at 3 months, she could very likely become pregnant if he were still fertile.

Cool no bother Beka … I will take a couple of pictures of Poppy and post them in a while. Im not great with getting pictures up so will get some help off my boyfriend when he is back later!!! She is supposed to be a mini rex but she looks like a dutch to me. you can let me know what you think. She just doesnt have that distinguishing feature that rex’s have… ( short hair ) I even said it to the breeder and he said her hair would change as she gets older. I didnt mind though… i got to see where he keeps all the bunnies and saw her parents so i was very happy with his set up and he seemed to genuinly care about all the animals. As soon as i held Poppy i knew she was for me.She is grey and white, she is stunning even if it is only my bias opinion.

Should i leave it afew days before i let them out together and will it be okay to do it in the living room where Henry spends most of his time or should i do it in my bedroom which i dont think he would consider as his territory as he is rarely allowed in there? I will have a read over the articles again now. I have some books too but i find the more information you read the more you get conflicting information so its nice to get advice from people with personal experience!xx

i’d introduce them in your room for a litle bit today. if they do well for ten minutes or so, you can see how they do in the living room. chances are that since she’s so young and pre-puberty it’s not going to be much of an issue. if you were introducing 2 or 3 months later and before her spay, that would be a different thing entirely.

i will say that once she reaches full puberty she might not be able to have playtime with him. it depends on how aggressive or territorial she becomes. it might not be an issue, but you can never tell from an early age. her real personality will not be evident until she’s an adult and altered. so always be careful to supervise, esp. a bit later on as her surgery gets closer.

Great thanks for that. Sorry forgot to answer your question regarding Henry. He was neutered over six weeks ago so everything should be fine on that front. I just hope there is no chance she is pregnant already! I plan on getting Poppy neutered in 6 weeks time… i rang the vet and they said they recommend spaying at 5 months or as soon as they start displaying signs of sexual maturity so at least i dont have to wait too long! Better go and do some reading now!!!xx

Okay so Henry and Poppy had their first date up in our bedroom a while ago. As far as I can tell it went well. At first they circled each other for a while and Henry sprayed her. There was alot of binkying from Poppy and she kept on going up to him and lowering her head. He didnt groom her …. he rubbed his chin on her instead. The whole time they were in the room together which was 30minutes Henry was honking while following her around. Near the end Henry let Poppy groom him for about 3 seconds and then he lost interest and kept trying to jump up on the bed so we ended their date. I am really happy. There was no mounting or biting. I am quite surprised though that Henry sprayed her twice. is this unusual for a neutered buck?

i have no experience with spraying. my first rabbit (an unneutered male) never sprayed in the 3 years i had him. Max, my neutered boy, has never sprayed. mounting is normal as a show of dominance, even in altered buns, but spraying…? hmmm. he does sound a bit territorial. esp. with the chinning.

Oh im wondering if it was successful as i thought then. I thought that because they were both binkying ( well poppy mainly) that it was a good sign. Henry is an odd bunny. When he was 4months old he started spraying me every single day without fail. It became a major pain. Every time i went to sit on the couch he would come up for a cuddle and without any warning he would spray me, my clothes…half the couch and the carpet. It went everywhere. I used to put a towel over me. The amount of washing i used to put on at the time….everything stank He also did a million poops in my lap too! Overnight when he was neutered it all stopped and my washing machine got a welcome break so when i saw him spraying poppy i thought to myself. NO NOT AGAIN! There was no mounting and a good bit of indifference towards the end of their date so im still hopeful

The batteries are gone in the camera in case you are wondering about the photos so will buy some over the next few days… xx

Okay so i have bent the rules a little with bonding my pair. I let them out together in the sitting room today where they are both housed and things went pretty much the same as yesterday but with abit more grooming.

Henry didnt honk as much and neither of them pooped like they did yesterday. Henry is still spraying her…and he mounted her head today so i pushed him off in case he got a bite. He tries to mount her abit from the back but is very sheepish about it and hasnt actually succeeded yet. Poppy was very relaxed and doing alot of grooming. Henry came up to her and held his head down for her to groom him too. This went on for about 5mins and was very cute to watch. She alternated from grooming her and him and Henry kept putting his head under hers to get attention.

At the beginning of their session they were circling each other and there was some nipping from Poppy of Henrys side and then she would go darting around the room totally hyper sending food and bedding flying everywhere. i had both their enclosures open and Henry and Poppy both went into Poppys cage and there was no nipping.

Should i be pleased with how things are going? There have been no confrontations between them yet except the nipping at the start but that was followed by grooming.

oh and i forgot to mention Henry was not chinning her today!

i think you’re going to need to wait to officially bond until after Poppy is spayed. you could allow some supervised playtime as long as they don’t get aggressive, but as far as housing them together, i would not do that until after. since she is nipping back, that makes me think she is already into some hormonal behavior and if you allowed them together unsupervised, there could be a scuffle and they could get seriously hurt.

Dont even know if i can let them out for supervised time together now. i just had them out for half an hour and he kept on spraying her and she didnt seem too pleased. He tucks himself under her chest until she grooms him so thats nice but i cant handle him spraying urine all over our living room. i have tried cleaning up bits but i can still smell it and dont know where it is This bonding business is very stressful!!!

sometimes it works out where they can get along pre-alter, but in this case you’re probably right that it’s just not a good idea. every bun is different and you’ve got to make do with the buns you have without causing any more stress on you.

Yes Beka i think i agree with you.  I have decided to put a hold on bonding for now until she is spayed.  I am going to concentrate on getting to know Poppy one on one without any distractions and i will let them both out for separate floor time. I will have to limit it to one to two hours each a day so Henry probably wont be happy but it will have to do for now.

I am still intrigued as to why he was spraying her. From reading other peoples posts i dont think anyone else has had a similar experience with a neutered boy! Oh who knows… he is unique, i will give him that much

Well sometimes they will spray even when neutered if they got in the habit before being neutered. I’ve crazily been sprayed a few times by shelter buns and been quite flattered, as it means ‘your mine’ heheh

He he Well Henry definitely got in the habit of spraying me every single day for a full month so he obviously hasnt forgotten how!!! It really got quite disgusting….he managed to get carpet, walls etc from my lap! He was so sweet then…followed me everywhere and demanded cuddles all the time. We really bonded! Then i got him neutered and now he doesnt seem to like me anymore. He goes straight for my boyfriend most of the time now

do you think the fact that he sprayed her and let her groom him lots on the first date that this is a good sign for the future?

it’s so hard ot tell with buns. you have to keep in mind that Poppy at 14 weeks is an entirely different bun than Poppy at 6 months. literally, they can be night and day. i’ve seen my buns groom each other and then fight with fur flying two minutes later, so it’s something that you’ll just need to take one day at a time when you’re ready to bond.
