On saturday afternoon, my bunny went to the vet as we noticed she was getting quite sick.
She a large build up of gunk in her tear ducts and she is finding it hard to keep her eyes open. Her nose is running and she is wheezing.
She has been on 0.7mls of anti-biotics twice a day for 3 days, and nothing really has happened.
I also noticed that she has been bleeding from ‘down there’ i’m not sure if she is just menstruating of if she has some sort of internal/external bleeding.
She is still eating, but very little and her poops are quite small.
Any tips on what i can do before tomorrow when i go to the vet again?

Hi Caitlin! Welcome to Binky Bunny I’m sorry to hear that your bunny is sick.

What type of medication is your rabbit on? Did you take her to a vet that is experienced with treating rabbits? If not, you can look for a veterinarian on http://www.rabbit.org.  It is always good to make sure your vet is experienced with bunnies – sometimes vets that are not experienced with bunnies are not able to treat them as well as experienced ones. If your vet IS rabbit savvy, can you give him a call and let him know whats going on? Then maybe he/she can recommend something to do.

Did the vet get you any eye drops? If not, maybe you can help your bunny by using some eye wash to get rid of the gunk in her eyes.  The bleeding I am not so sure about, my bunnies are all spayed, so I have not had any experience with that, but I would call the vet about that as well.  I looked up some information about that online, and it said that first you should make sure its bleeding and not just very dark colored urine.  If it is blood it could be a sign of bleeding from her uterus, so it is very important you get her to a rabbit savvy vet right away.  How old is your bunny? If it is uterine bleeding, they will probably recommend getting her spayed as this helps to prevent uterine cancer.

I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help, but it sounds like her sickness is quite serious, so calling the vet should tell you if she needs to get to emergency care or not.

Good luck and let us know how she is doing

Welcome Caitlin, sorry to hear that your bunny is sick 🙁

Moobunnay’s shared the same advice I would. It sounds like there are several serious health conditions going on at once and she needs proper care.

To read a bit more about snuffles and bunny respiratory issues, this article by Susan Brown is helpful: web.archive.org/web/20011121203337/http://www.therabbeeotcharity.freeserve.co.uk/snuffles.html

Rabbits do not have a menstrual cycle, nor do they bleed from the vulva when they are healthy. This is likely a sign that there’s a serious problem with her reproductive tract and needs to be seen by a rabbit savvy vet, ASAP.

Welcome Caitlin.  I’m sorry to hear your bunny is sick.  You’ve received good advice.  I just want to add – when you say she is bleeding.  Is it actually blood or just very red urine?  Where do you see this – on her, in her urine or ???.

And did this start after she was on the antibiotics.  Some antibiotics can make urine very red.    Red urine is harmless  and can be also due to diet – some veggie and greens can do this.  Also weather changes can be a cause of red urine.

WIth that said though, if there really is blood in the urine which is rare, then it can be due to other illnesses like bladder infection and uterine cancer.  But don’t panic, if this started after the meds, my guess is it’s just red urine.  However, I’m not a vet sooooo……

What I would do is get a paper towel soak up what you think is the blood or red urine and put it in a plastic bag and take it with you to the vet.  And I also agree make sure your vet is rabbit savvy!  You might want to call your vet and ask him/her if she has another method to catch urine that may be better for her/him.

i got quite a shock when i saw the pic of the rabbit on the front page…it looked just like mine and i was wondering how you got a pic of my rabbit but its not mine lol.
aoh and in reply to the blood, it was part of her urine. so says the vet

Oh, are you talking about my white bunny? Jack? I am assuming that is what you meant by the front page – home page? You can also check him and his friends out on the webcam. Maybe he can keep you company during this sad time. Bailey likes the camera and grooms it often – she gives lots of kisses to people watching. Though lately, my husband has been getting lots of attention from the bunnies – come to find out he keeps bunny food with him. (sneaky!)

Oh,so when you said in regards to the blood – that it was part of her urine, did you mean the red color was just her urine or there was blood in her urine. Again, I am so sorry for your loss! I know what it feels like.

If it doesn’t hurt too much, I’d love to hear about what your bunny was like. And if it’s still too fresh, maybe you can come back at a later date and share.
