Why does my bun eat SO MUCH paper????!!?

Lilly will go to ANY length to get paper.. she goes into purses, backpacks, garbage cans.. jumps on the counter, chairs, and desks.. stands up to eat the hanging files.. its so ridiculous.. I dont know what to do.. if she doesn’t get her paper "fix" she will go after anything.  Does paper + wood (she eats the doors, baseboards, coffee table legs.. etc) have fiber in it or somthing?  Does she need more fiber in her diet?  I dont know what can possibly make anything eat sheets of paper a day.. she has been doing this since she was a baby.. but we recently got rid of her phonebook for a few weeks and she eats EVERYTHING else she can find now.. needless to say, I found a new phonebook yesterday and gave one back.  help?!!!?

Approximately how much hay does she eat a day?

well we give her unlimited hay.. but.. she doesn’t eat all that much of it, although lately she has been eating a bit more.. she seems to like the paper better.. which is why, if its fiber she is lacking.. why wont she eat the hay!?

eta  everytime we see her eat paper. we feed her hay.. by hand.. but and even if she eats all the hay, still goes after paper.. i dont knoww!!

Does Lilly have any seagrass mats?  I think maybe more than eating the paper, she is enjoying tearing and ripping at it.  My buns just looooove tearing at their seagrass mats alllll day long.  I get mine in big boxes from Other Living Things (online) and they are good quality, but I’m sure there are tons of other places to get them, try those out and see if that gives her her "fix" !

Also, maybe you can try switching the type of hay. I know some who don’t care much for Timothy. But most bunnies love Oat Hay because of the sweet seed heads.

My rabbits steal mail off of our ottoman and chew on it. We keep some shreds of paper with their phonebook and they take turns chewing on it. We have learned if its something important to put it up high so they cant reach it. This gives a whole new meaning to the term, "my dog ate it." I have never seen a dog eat paper but if you have a bun its very possible to lose your homework to them.

i think all bunnies enjoy paper! they also seem to love chewing on boxes too… i’d second Poopy’s suggestion to try some other grass hays. but to cut back on the paper chewing give her something more fun to do… like making a boredom buster box, adding some mats and willow toys will likely delight her too.

haha…Heidi, I saw your picture and laughed really hard. Felony’s favorite trick is to rip an entire page of paper out of the phonebook and run around the couch with it in his mouth like a trophy. My bun looooves paper and cardboard. He’s eaten half the cover off my Federal Rules of Civil Procedure book.

They have phone books they shred but dont eat. So I have to give them clean pieces of paper which is what Pookie has in her mouth. They also like to steal mail we leave off of the Ottoman as well so we have to watch them for that. Actually, anything paper laying around is fair game so we have to be careful!

i have a selective bunny he wont eat blankpages but if i have a important fone number wrote on it or and adress i can be sure he will eat it
