So.  I bought a new car today.  I bought a 2007 Ford Focus.  I love it.  However I’m feeling very unsure of my decision here as this is the biggest purchase (aside from college) that I’ve ever made.  Is it normal to be so unsure after buying a car?  Ha.

Anyway it’s really cute.  It’s kiwi green and exactly the car I want (other than it not being a hybrid).  It looks like this.

This is what the car looks like but that’s not me.  I didn’t have time to take a picture, so I just found one on the net.  But that’s the same car other than mine has a spoiler.

GASP – NOT ABOUT BUNNIES???!!! How dare you! LOL

That car is very nice! I think that any major financial investment, such as a car will leave anyone with second thoughts. However, I think you will be just fine as I assume you’ve budgeted out for this car and it wasn’t an “impulse buy”? I am gearing up to do the same in January and yep, I can tell you it is definately scary and a lot of money!

It’s SORTA an impulse buy but not really…  I’ve actually been looking at this car for over a month now, but today my car broke down at job number 2 (actually, technically in the gas station across the street from job number 2, as I’d just filled up my tank and the bugger wouldn’t budge.  Unbelieveable) and I had to walk 4 miles home in the pouring rain cause some people just aren’t as good of friends as you’d hope them to be.  So today I learned an important lesson in friendship, finance and fuel consumption!  Ha.

But no, I knew how much I could spend…  I knew I was going to need a new one as my car had a SERIOUS mechanical problem.. I was just really hoping it would last me through the end of the summer so I could save up a bigger down payment.  It didn’t end up so bad though, cause I already had $2000 down.  Still, by the end of the summer I’d have had around $5000…  oh well, the moment is now, right?

Ah, fate cast you in another direction is sounds like. Any way that you can siphon the gas out of the tank of your dead car to use in your new one? Total bummer and I have also unfortunately been there with the “who is really your friend thing.” You had a budget in mind and knew what you could afford, and you needed a dependable car, so, I think you made the right choice.

Congratulations! It’s a very scary feeling when you’ve taken on that first major car commitment. However, just because you’ve purchased it before you had saved more, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t putting that money into the car by the end of the summer. If things are tight, you’ve arranged for a reliable way to have transportation to newer and better jobs over the next several years. And, you Always have the option of making larger payments to get it paid off sooner. Get to know what the simple maintenance tasks are so you can have it run smoothly and not get into major repairs for a long time. (Check the oil, tires, fluids like anti-freeze & water). You’ll have this car for a long time (I hope!) so a wise investment is always a good idea.

Congratulations! It sounds like you have been planning on this so that’s good. Rabbitpam has some great advice too.

i love it!!! that is such a cute color green! it’s girly (but who cares? you’re a girl!) my husband bought a new car this spring. he needed it. he’d been driving a run-down 93 Corolla with like, a gazillion miles on it. he could have fixed it but at a certain point it’s no longer worth putting money into it. he got a great deal (it’s an 07, but it was leftover from last year, so it still had almost no miles on it). and he’s so happy having a new car. he works really hard and he deserves it. and like Pam said, make sure to take good care of it and it should last you for a long time. it’s small too, so it’s probably pretty good on gas mileage (since this is everyone’s number one concern right now.) i have a small suv (a Kia Sportage) and i’m almost afraid to drive b/c of gas prices! i’d love to get something smaller, but i prefer to drive a car till it’s undrivable. i think i’ll be able to get another 3-5 years out of it, assuming nothing catastropic happens.

Thanks! Yeah I replaced my 93 Honda Civic… I’d been driving that car for 8 years but I’d been through a lot with it. It’s technically my second car purchase but my first next-to-new one… I got a great deal though. My friend works at the dealership and was my dealer..he dropped 2000 bucks off just like that and gave me 1000 for my trade in…WAY more than it was worth as it has a cracked head gasket, a brake leak, a wire short that makes the lights and heat turn on and off at will, and a driver’s side window that doesn’t close all the way…. on and did I mention my dad’s friend hit the bumper and now it hangs off and is rusty? Yeah I’m so much better off. ha.

I feel a lot better about it today now that I’ve slept on it and sat down with all of my bills to be sure I can afford it… I can and only had to put one of my student loans into forebearance for 1 year… yikes, but it’s better than being strapped.

I do appreciate the advice… I’m lucky to have a very car savvy dad who reminds me of all of my routine maintanence (if we didn’t talk about that and medical insurance, we’d probably have nothing to talk about… well those things and Led Zeppelin hehe…) and who made me take a basic car maintanance class in high school before he’d even let me TOUCH a steering wheel… My car lasted a long time and just got old… 175,000 miles will do that to a car!
