        Hi Everyone,

Its me again … im back to ask another couple of questions before i get my rabbit tomorrow. I was out shopping today for linoleum to line the cage and also bedding. Carefresh is very expensive but i decided to buy two packets of it just to see how i get on and see how long it lasts for.  I also bought a packet of other stuff which is called critter litter pearls. It is described as 99% dust free and made from non toxic all natural minerals and claims it reduces cage cleaning by 30% or more.It is made from 100%  all natural bentonite. This is a pure, non toxic, inert clay material . Sorry, bought the long description… just thought it would be useful if no one has heard of itdo ye think this sounds okay?

My other question is about the cat litter box i bought. It is a corner one with a cover and cat flap to get into it. Im just wondering should i take off the door…im afraid this will be confusing for him and prevent him from using the box. also i was gonna place the box ontop of a little wooden cabit i bought to optimise space in the cage…it is 25cm high . would this be a bad idea or should i put the cat litter box on the ground? Thanks in advance for any suggestions

well me I would put it on the ground so bunny can easily get to it. and the door if bun is shy of it I would take the whole top off as bun takes to a litterbox I would try putting the top back on  and see.  how bun does. at first you want it to be easy to get to and not intimidating. I am not sure about the door once bun gets used to the top being on try the door again and see. oh and put some hay in there for him to want to sit there eat pee and poop. I really don’t know about the door tho I am rethinking it   usually bun will sit in the litterbox and sometimes rest in it so he probably won’t like the door at all.  anyone else got any ideas?

I use critter litter and its fantastic, the cat country one is the same stuff but its usually cheaper.
I have been mixing it with yesterdays news for cats as well because I saw a huge bag of it on sale!
I have to wait for Toki to get fixed so in the meantime the extra absorption is helping.

I use the pearls and love them. Well, not me personally. Oh, you get the idea!

I mix them with yesterday’s news and it helps keep the smell down until I can clean up. I don’t use too many of the pearls, but lots of “news”.

Good luck with the new bunny!

Thanks a million everyone for the reassurance about the critter litter. i will use newspaper, carefresh and that for now and see how i get on. i will also take the advice about leaving the top off the cat litter box. i have everything set up now and ready for my little guy. I noticed in my local supermarket the other day they were selling cat litter that they describe as being 100% natural clay that clumps. i’ve a feeling this wouldn’t be okay but wanted to check what ye think? wish it was suitable as it is such good value!!!

Clumping litters are considered to be bad for bunnies, I think because of the dust and the fact that bunnies often eat a bit of their litter.  The stuff that makes the pee clump can make them sick.

Don’t use news paper. I tried lining the pan w/it & had a very bad odor problem. A friend told me that it makes urine smell worse, stopped & no more odor.

We use wood stove pellets, only a thin layer is needed, it swells up. Super cheap, $5 for 40lb. in the states. Ranked excellent odor control by HRS. http://www.rabbit.org/journal/1/liver-disease.html Can you get them in Ireland?

Your rabbit will most likely choose for you, you put the pan in the corner where the bun does his business. Never heard of putting one up like that.
Read everything you can on BB info & HRS, most of your questions are on these sites.

Just a heads up, nearly everything we got for our new bunny we don’t use today. Oh well, live & learn.

How big is your cage? Are you going to use an x-pen?

I think I will use the newspaper for now as i have been using that to line my guinea pig cage and havent noticed any problems regarding odour but i will take what you said on board and see if it is any different with my bunny. Thanks

The cage i am using is a pen measuring 48″x24″ and he also has a run i can attach to that that is double the size.  my aim is to let him out in the evenings once i have him trained. We dont have the xpen here in ireland

The wood stove pellets sound great … its just a matter of trying to locate them if we do have them in ireland. We are quite limited with our choice of beddings over here unfortunately.

Do NOT use cat litter with bunnies especially the clumping kind. If they swallow it they cannot cough it up and they can choke on it. It is also very dusty and some brands may be fatal to bunnies. Please do not use any kind of cat litter with your bunny.

Sorry.. I’m late to the party. My bunny is a smaller breed, her crate is roughly 10 x her size with a litter box that is twice her size. I have the Critter Litter in her litter box and Care Fresh in the pan below her crate. I know it is said to be bad to use a clumping litter for bunnies due to potential ingestion, but what if the bunny cannot touch it? Is it safe to use then? I’d like to use it instead of the Care Fresh as her droppings are hard to “sift” through and I end up clearing the whole pan and just refreshing everything. It’s becoming quite costly. Any suggestions you might provide would be most appreciated!
