i’m participating in the cancer relay for life tonight… first timer here!  i’m in a team of 10 gals and we’ll be up all night relaying away.  it’s a broadway theme this year and so the organizers will be playing movies all night.  i heard sound of music was one and i loooove that movie!  i’m excited.  i’m sure that’ll wear off some where around 3am.  lol.  relay ends at 7am and we’re going out for egg mcmuffins before we head home to hit the sack.

we made t-shirts to wear with our team name on them and then had a t-shirts decorating party.  i made a collage of some of the people i’m walking for… my dad, my uncle, my aunt, my step dad’s late wife and the only survivor in my collage is…. baby bun!!!  yay for the survivor!

        wish me luck!

Oh BBM, you’re in for a treat! ^_^ I’ve attended three Relays since I was diagnosed in 05. I love the Survivor’s Lap, I swear one of these years I’m going to have the strength to run it!
God bless you for taking the time to do this. So many people depend on the efforts of volunteers at these events. And congrats to Baby Bun, she is undoubtedly the CUTEST survivor I have ever seen!

phew!  what an experience!  it’s now 8:30ish pm here and i have slept most of the day trying to recoup from the relay.

the whole experience was amazing and i hope to make a yearly tradition of particiapting.  i didn’t realize how raw some of my emotions were still over loosing dad almost 7 years ago… watching the survivors lap it was hard not to bawl.  i was partly proud of those walking for being thrivers and partly angry that my dad wasn’t amoung them.  i think i’ve been avoiding my feelings of anger towards my dad for leaving… after all he was a loving and gentle and patient man, so how could i be mad at him?  it wouldn’t be fair.  but there it is.

anyways i resolved then to visit this issue on my own time because i was there last night to fight back in honor of my dad and other loved ones lost & try to make a wee difference.  it was harder than i thought!  i knew that the hours of 3 and 4am would be the toughest mentally but i wasn’t prepared for the wetness.  blessedly it didn’t rain but it was sooooo damp.  our snack table and everything on it was covered with such dew that it appeared to have rained.  and there was a dew point some where atop my head so that my hair was sopping wet all night.  i have always been a literal ‘hot head’ and can steam up a window in any season all by myself… i prefer to assume this is because i’m a hottie

hopefully my wet hair & the cold temps won’t have broken my body down enough to catch a cold!

anyways, once the birds started chirping, the sun started to rise, the songs started playing and we started packing up (in shifts of course… we kept team members on the track from 7pm – 7am)  i knew i would win the battle of the relay challenge.  no doubt this is why the challenge of relaying for those hours exists.  i found it quite symbolic.

here are a few pics… the survivors lap… the official relay start and a pic of my team underway… and a pic during the lighting of the luminaries.

almost forgot to add… mimzmum, while i didn’t run any laps last night (after a few laps at the start i knew my endurance wouldn’t take any running laps!)  i did dedicate one of my laps to you, my binkybunny friend   i’m proud of you for your fight!  ((((((hugs))))))

you sign up in teams of 10 people and walk / run the track for 12 hours (7pm to 7am).  the idea is to have at least one member of your team on the track at all times.  we went in groups of 2 or 3 mostly.  there were a couple of teams from fitness clubs that had a runner on all the time which was quite impressive.  one woman ran laps from about 2:30am to 4 am when i was walking!  hardcore.

everyone brings tents & lawn chairs & sets up ‘camp’ for people who aren’t relaying.  a couple of gals on my team laid down for cat naps during the night but i decided not to.  i usually can’t sleep (or sleep well) when there’s a lot going on around me like that so i just planned to ‘chill’ in my chair between stints.

the girls in my team were all from the daycare my good friend works at.  an almost 3yr girl who went to their school lost her battle with cancer a year ago & it inspired them to relay.  i was invited along too and it turns out that i went to highschool with the girl’s mother.  quite a coicidence.

boy am i sore today!  it hurts to try to get my butt off the couch   i love it.  it’s a great feeling after you’ve worked out but even better that it was for a great cause that’s dear to my heart!

Kudos to you! And thank you for running the lap for me! I am humbled beyond belief! *tears up*
I know how you must feel about your dad, I lost my (adoptive) mother to pancreatic cancer in September of 1981. At the same time I found out I was adopted for the first time and so lots of shock there. In those days, especially with that particular strain of cancer, you pretty much were just sent home to die. People like Michael Landon and now Patrick Swayze bring the same sadness over their struggle to me as watching my mom slowly waste away and not being able to do anything about it. But now so much is done to help the patient survive, it really is quite amazing. And a good deal of it is because of these relays. So all I have to say is I am SO proud of you for your effort, wet hair and all, and thank you so much for your support!
Ironically today, I was in the grocery store and saw an older gentleman from my survivor’s group who is still battling multiple myeloma (sp?) and has been for the last three years despite prognoses that had him dead with in 3 months. He’s hobbled by leg vein problems and bouts with pneumonia, but he’s still plugging away. I was so inspired!
The really tragic cases are the children. I just don’t understand why the children have to get cancer. Someone my age, yeah, nowadays you expect something like that, but the little ones….it’s just devastating!
One of my best friends died of leukemia at 18. But even to lose someone of advanced age to this disease is unacceptable and too short of a life. Our motto at this year’s relay was “Cancer Never Takes a Holiday”, so we as survivors, family and friends of survivors and our caregivers/doctors have vowed to never take a holiday in the battle against cancer.
And isn’t it funny how you’ll meet people that you bond with immediately at one of these events or run into someone you actually knew? Shows what a small world it truly is. ^_^
Whew, off my soapbox now. My fingers are killing me from all that typing! lolz…..
