        Hey There,

I have two lops that I have had for almost a year and a half. I am currently have a problem with my male rabbit chewing my carpet. He is putting almost 3 inch holes in it. I am currently renting and therefore can kiss my deposit goodbye, but does anyone have ideas for how to stop him from doing this? I have tried chewing sprays for dogs and cats, but he seems to actually enjoy that and it promotes the problem. They have plenty of other stuff to chew, but I am not sure if I am giving him the wrong thing.

        Please help.

        Thanks

        Sarah

Hi Sarah! Welcome here! This is actually not an uncommon problem with rabbits and I am very sorry to hear your deposit is gone.   However there a more things that you can do like place a board or cardboard over the spot (tape it down) and most rabbits love the bitter apple spray.  What I’ve used is pure lemon oil and I have also heard that grapefruit oil works well as a deterrent too.  There are of course other measures like catching the stinker in the act and giving a sharp no with the clap of your hands and Mr. squirt bottle too.  Another option would be to confine your guy to a good-sized x-pen set up with a tarp or linoleum underlayment with a sheet on top for traction.  That way Sir Chews A Lot can have play space and you keep the rest of your carpet and your sanity.

I also want you to check out our BUNNY PROOFING section here: https://binkybunny.com/Default.aspx?tabid=61 It’s with some great stuff under BUNNY INFO.

I hope these ideas help and feel free to ask any other questions you may have!

Is there particular places that your bunny chews? If so, I’ve heard on here that putting a squirt of perfume on that spot could deter your bun from chewing there.

Also, is he neutered? Neutering a bunny can really help calm the chewing, digging, etc.

What I personally do when my Boston chews the carpet is give her a quick squirt with a spray bottle. It works very well, in fact I haven’t had to squirt her in ages!

yeah, try a squirt bottle too. i just recently started using one b/c i’m bonding and my bunny HATES it. that might help… of course, only when you were supervising.

                Hello!

I have the exact same problem I’ve got holes galore in my RENTED apartment floor, haha. I think my solution would be the one that Scarlet Rose mentioned of setting up a large ex-pen, and putting down a rug underneath it for your bunny to live in while he is not supervised. You could also put down a large rug and confine him to a tiled area with a baby gate while you are not home so that he only chews on the rug.

A rug that worked very well for me is the “outdoor” rugs that Target sells for patios. They are very large, provide traction, and their aren’t any threads on them for the bunny to start pulling on. Also, they are waterproof and therefore very easy to clean. Also, places like Big Lots or Marshalls sell rugs for much cheaper than regular places.

You can let your bunny out of the ex-pen when you are available to supervise and prevent any chewing! If you notice he chew in corners in particular (as mine do), purchase some tiles from Home Depot and put them in the corners, as well as over any existing holes as those are the places a bunny will usually chew first.

                Good Luck!

if your landlord is like my previous one, he would have found any reason to not return the deposit anyways… it happens, that’s what the deposit is for.

Thank you for all your help! He honestly just chews where ever he pleases. I am going to try the suggestions you have provided. I have two buns and currently they are confined to a specific room. I don’t want to confine them anymore then that because they have a tendency to get restless. My little girl bun is amazing. She learns from my other bun, but can be easily trained to not do it. They are excellent most of the time. Just on occasion my male bun who is neutered likes to pull apart my carpet.

Thanks again! I will be sure to let you know how those go. I was actually going to try the squirt bottle since I know he hates water.

If he’s chewing anywhere, I’d just watch close (I know, pain!) and chase him away clapping and saying “NO!” when he does it. Then redirect him to something fun to chew (phonebook, or try the diggy box in the toy test section-it’s good for chewer/diggers).

As for your deposit, my last place had about one square foot of board showing Kokanee had chewed it right down to the baseboards. I told them when I left that they could deduct my deposit, but I’d like a receipt that the carpet was REPLACED in THAT ROOM as per the landlord tennant guidelines or I’d be seeing them in court.
My deposit was returned in full

you go k&k!  lol.  thats how to do it!

another carpet chewing fix is to put a 12″X12″ ceramic tile over the spot.  tiles only cost a buck a piece so you can put them over the trouble spots.  then you can put something on top of the tile for bun to shred.  like a phone book or the sports section of the newspaper (who reads that anyways right &#160

                          Hey All,

So far the spray bottle has been working thus far. The chewing has stopped and I am not using it to tame some of my buns other bad habits. Thanks for all the advice and I appreciate it!

oh good! i’m glad to hear it’s working for you so far! do be aware, they can get “used to it” if it’s overused. it might lose it’s effectiveness. try to clap and say no loudly for correcting smaller behaviors. sometimes that’s enough.

Hi All – I’m going through this same issue with my dwarf lion head bunny. Unfortunately you it’s causing more stress than I would like in our house and marriage! I continuously move the bunny from one area to the next when it’s chewing but nothing is actually preventing her from chewing in the first place. Is the spray bottle the best option from what you all have seen? We have placed pillows in every corner we have to stop the bunny from going underneath her go-to spots but nothing seems to do the trick. Thanks!
