Shedding has been getting heavy here & as usual Jessica is not too happy w/ letting me groom her.  I found some pearl necklace poops, so I wanted to start giving them petromalt.  I know Scarlet Rose uses this…so how much do I give them & how often?  Neither of them would eat it off my fingers, so I had to mix it w/ their dried fruit treats.

I think the best thing is to make sure they are eating plenty of hay and drinking water. I don’t think most vets recommend this nowadays for rabbits.

Actually I don’t use it. I use papaya tablets. Perhaps it was someone else? Who knows, but anyway, it’s got a lot of sugar in it, you can give it to your rabbit about a 1/4″ piece but like Sarita said, it really isn’t used now-of-days.

So the papaya tabs will keep things moving.  I just worried that during a heavy shed they will intake too much fur.  Jessica is very good w/ her hay, but Leo is a bit anti-hay.  I just plucked Jessica really well tonight.  So I’ll cut out the laxatone and will just use the papaya tabs.

                Thanks!

Hey, reviving an old thread, in case any of you all have any other insights!

Lizzy’s shedding (*sigh*) and she’s a brat and won’t eat as much hay as I wish. She does eat it, but not nearly as much as Robbie… and I’ve noticed a couple pearl-necklace poops. (I’ve switched her to a hay blend of oat/wheat/barley, because she absolutely despised timothy. That was 3 weeks ago. She eats more hay now, but still not that much.)

She gets 2 papaya tablets a day.

If petromalt/laxatone isn’t recommended anymore, is there anything else I can try to help her out?

You can also give pineapple (fresh)…Try reducing her pellets a bit to make her eat more hay and put hay in more often (like two times a day instead of one, sounds silly but it works)

I just have to stick my head in and say at least that petromalt is EXCELLENT in getting an already stagnant or stagnatING GI tract going AS LONG as there isn’t a physical blockage -at least in my experiences with Binkles. Maybe I’m the one who uses it? =x

I’m not sure how well it works as a preventative though.

K&K, does organic dried pineapple work as well as fresh? I had a miraculous grocery trip to Whole Foods (local organic hippie-market), and found some–they are dried only, no sugar or additives. (Whole Foods also had Dandelion Greens and watercress and Orange Guard bug spray…it was truly shockingly fabulous! And expensive…which is why I don’t normally shop there!)

Robbie, of course, is my garbage-disposal bunny, and immediately scarfed his dried pineapple up. Lizzy turned up her nose, but I’m hoping she’ll learn to like it… (The only thing she didn’t have to LEARN to like, btw, was papaya tablets. She had to be coerced into eating everything else…)

I’m cutting her pellets back just a little. I tried offering her more hay, and she gave me the “what, are you KIDDING?!” look. Darned rabbit is smarter than us all, and will not be tricked…
