I had a question about building a bunny cage. When making shelves in the cage , how do the bunnies get up on them? Do you have to build a ramp going up to every level? All the pics ive seen dont show ramps for them to get up there. I wouldn’t think they could jump to every level and not fall or hurt themselves. Please help and give any neat ideas for building a cage. thanks!

        * will be using the storage cubes.

bunnies are very good jumpers, altho some more than others. if you’re talking NIC cubes, the bun will have no problems getting between levels.

my buns jump levels without ramps just fine with the NIC cubes.  they’re about 14″ high.  tho it’s best if the floor on levels is something that allows traction.

NIC cube can be very addictive, about the time you get a condo together, you think of another way to do it….lol

3 of my 4 can jump one and even 2 grids high with no problem, I have scrap carpet at the take off area for traction.

My 4th is pretty overweight, and at least for now I cut some ramps out of plywood, attached carpet scraps with zipties and then used 2 larger zipties to attach to the upper level so she can run up and down.

In one condo I have a sturdy box under one hole (it goes up about half way) and the bunnies jump on it and then up through the hole. I have some of those cheap mats with the rubber backing around the holes on each floor so they can get a grip when they come up.

B/c the base of my bunny condo is a former dog cage, it is kinda high.  Though my lil’ chunky monkey Jessica has NO problem w/ that.  So I have a little igloo that they can hide in and jump on to get to the next level.  I also tried to stagger the lengths of shelves or levels.  W/ that I mean that one slightly overlapses the other and another is more of a straight short.  Boy I hope that made sense?

You can also place shelves (a single NIC panel basically) between the levels and put coroplast or some other flooring on it.  The buns will use this to get up and down.  Even my 2 1/4 pound dwarf can jump up the 14″ between levels.

I find with the cable ties my bunnies have started to chew them, I have noticed that some of the grids are now falling on one side. I will have to find something else to keep them together.

Osprey…Jessica is a dwarf as well…but she’s not 2 1/4 lb.  She’s also the better leaper b/t her and Leo (lionhead).

My Tucker is a pretty small and he can jump up one cube height with no difficulties..but he sometimes is scared to get down.  I know he CAN get down because he used to jump off the top of his 18″ high cage with no issues but I am a sucker for my bun and so I went to Sam’s Club and got a three walled box, the fourth wall of it is kind of a U shape..and it was all folded over thick cardboard..it makes a perfect bunny house and I was able to position it so that he could use it as a step to get up and off of his second level.  He loves it because now he can do his bunny laps much faster and this way I don’t worry that he will get stuck up on the second level where he has his veggies and hay but not a water bottle.

I tried doing a ramp but it took up alot of space in the cage and it looked awkward and Tucker didn’t even seem to want to use it, so I took it back out.  That I am sure was just my perfectionism acting up though.   LOL it looked weird to me and things like that bug me..I am for function but it has to look nice too hehehe.
