bonding can really be tough,I'm sorry to hear about the recent set back :-(

Some bondings can take months, so don't lose heart. You might be able to have them work with someone at the rescue, since many rescues have bonding experts. With the mounting, they're still trying to establish who's in charge, even the one day apart can set them back. Can you try something different, like feeding them veggies together - give them something that's more interesting to do than fighting. Maybe it's time to try a car ride or a shopping cart date again?

I also understand how it feels to become attached to a bunny that your bun isn't bonding with. Pandora and Hareiette never bonded, but we just didn't have the heart to take her back to the shelter.

so.. i've been so busy..my thesis show is coming up- i have less than two weeks... I'll post infor about that and my new website(once I have time to get it up) with my artwork..

anyway, I was so frustrated that they had a set back that I tried to bond them in the living room- nuetral ground since I was switching their pens at night... they started to groom eachother. It was the best bonding session. he groomed her, she groomed him.. and so on..

so now if we are home we leave the pens open.. and they can have free interaction with the house and eachother. They haven't gotten the whole, you groom me and then I'll groom you equally. they are both stubborn and want all of the attention. It's been going okay, except I can't do much more than one "session" a day, when I get home at 11pm..

the really huge problem right now is patina keeps head mounting Fujoe.. she's sly about it, will be grooming him and then start mounting his head... I don't know why. She's practically given up mounting the back...i haven't seen him mount her in a long time. He might try, but she'll run away and he's not persistant about it.

I'm a lot more confident this is going to work, but it's going to take some more time..

My buns have been a happy couple for almost 4 months now, and they still BOTH want all of the attention.  It is quite funny to see them literally "head-butt" each other, each one trying to push their head under the other bun's head so they can get the grooms!  I don't think they will ever really get the "you groom me, I groom you" concept But eventually they both get their grooms (although I do feel that Kramer often gets the short end of the grooms...but he loves falling asleep with his head propped up on Juli's shoulder, so I guess thats how it evens out!)

I'm so relieved to hear things are getting better :-) Those setbacks can be so disheartening, I'm glad it's turning around.

When Patina starts humping Fujoe's head turn her around the right direction.

This is big progress!  Pat yourself on your back!   Patience is paying off.  Bonding can really be tough because it can be so unpredictable.  I've had three day bondings, and bondings that took three months and longer.   EVEN if you had found what seemed to be a love at first site match, though this can help make things easier, there really is NO guarantee that they will get along back at home base.  It can really be tricky sometimes.   And with bonding many times you have to mix in your own gut feeling and just try something different.   Maybe for Fujoe and Patina, the stress of being confined caused problems over time, and maybe the freedom fits better with the temperament of your bunnies.   Kudos to you for working through it.

Yeah for Fujoe - that he's settling down. This is very positive. Looks as if Patina is working out her role. And of course you know to stop her from mounting his head. Bunnies are known to bite the other's genitals. I think she'll also settle down in time too.   What does Fujoe do when she's mounting him?

The fact that they are able to hang out and not fight when they have free range is wonderful.  Just keep a close eye, and do what you're doing and hopefully in time, things will begin to progress to a happy little family!

Just wanted to let you know that even if Fujoe and Patine don't work it out, telling us about your experiences is helping those of us looking for companions for our buns.

I heard back from Toni at Red Door and once I get over this latest round of bronchitis I'll be bringing in Pepper for some dating of her own.  We talked about how and where I plan to work things out in my teeny apartment, and she said "now, some bonds are really fast, some take time and some just don't work at all".  I reassured her that I knew, and mentioned that I knew you and that you were writing a bonding journal on here.  We agreed that we both feel bad for all the stress you are dealing with.

Wendyzski - I'm excited for you and Pepper.  I'm sorry you're sick.  Hope your feeling better.  Bronchitis sure is tough to get rid of.  Takes so long.  Keep us updated.

Announcing....

I offically adopted Patina today! She was a "foster" rabbit just in case something went wrong. but now she is ours, and a part of our happy family. They are getting along great. We still have not put them in the same cage at night.. we're both so tired, and wouldn't wake up if there was a fight. But in the morning when they get let out, they run to eachother. it's really nice.

there is still some mounting on patina's part and there are poops all over the place... but it could be worse. That and I haven't been home enough to clean them up.. eh...

so, so far so good.. thanks everyone for all of your support! so it took like a month?? sigh..

hurrah for Patina being officially a member of the family! :-) i'm so glad to hear the bonding is coming along so well - the poop war will really cut down once they're fully bonded and living together.

so just really quick...

patina and fujoe spent their first night together last night. all is well! I didn't find a dead bunny this morning, so I'm gald. since this whole bfa show thing, everything is a mess-- and the apartment is starting to smell like bunny. I haven't had time to soak the litter boxes in vinger since BEFORE we got patina (a month ago). SO yesterday morning I soaked one of them in the bathtub before I left and when I got home last night I was too tired to rinse it out and put it back... so my bf and i decieded they were just going to sleep together..

ha, what a good reason to do it! but all went well, and they seem to really like eachother- it's nice to know they have eachother and that I took a bunny out of a shelter.

Congratulations!  Bonding can be so stressful, on us and on our buns, it is really good that you were able to stick with it.  Every bunny deserves a best friend if their house has room for one.

yaaaaay!  That's such great news.

I am so encouraged by your progress.  I might have given up, but knowing that they worked it out gives me such hope that my grumpy little divabun will find herself a husbun.
