My bunny like some of the other posts have mentioned is messy.  She poops and pees everywhere.  I haven’t tried litter training her because I’ve heard they learn better once they are spayed.  Holly is about 8 months old.  She sometimes also eats her poop.

I was just wondering how much it costs to spay her.  I am really interested in doing this.

It can really vary from place to place. Where I live (East Coast, Canada) it will run you about $120.00 for a spay. Your best bet would be to find a good rabbit vet in your area and ask for a quote.

You should definitely spay your rabbit. Despite the cleanliness issues, there are many health reasons why you should spay your bunny (including an 80% chance of fatal reproductive cancer if she’s not spayed).

I second the opinion that you should definitely spay your bun! In Maryland, Cadbury’s spay cost me $140 (the spay itself was $95, but then there was the bloodwork and overnight hospital stay).

I would think you could start with litter training now – Cadbury learned pretty quick when she was only 10 weeks old. They will usually get a little messy again when hormones kick in, but overall she was always using the box – before and after spay.

I’ve heard anywhere from $100 to $350 for a spay.
I would highly recommend getting her spayed, since it will also improve her health, behavior and box habits.

It’s important to see a vet that has done many successful spays. Here is a list of bunny vets in the Orlando area:

Thanks for the links Gravehearted.  I will have to check this out.  Holly is so sweet. I’d hate for her to suffer from cancer or anything else.

well, at my vet in Ohio it was $285 for everything… but this did not include bloodwork.  she had bloodwork done a couple months before that and it was about 60 bucks.  health reasons aside, i noticed a change in her behavior almost overnight.  she is perfectly littertrained and can be out of her cage all day long with very few (destruction) problems.  it was maybe the best 285 bucks i have ever spent.

Bringing my girlfriend’s bun into be spayed on Friday for $170-$250 depending on what they find.

Apparently (and I haven’t told her yet) the X-rays on the visit for her GI Statis showed that there seems to be a growth in the bun’s uterus.  As we had already made plans for the spay this week, I figured there was no cause to let her know about it.  She’d be a nervous wreck for the whole week.  I just keep on checkin’ in on the bun every day to make sure she’s still poopin’ and eatin’ properly.  Hopefully whatever it is, it will be fixed when it is removed with everything else.

eeek. I hope all turns out ok.

I contacted two of the area vets today for informational calls. I found out it will be around258.00.  We can’t do it right now, but I can plan for it.

I"ve been reading a lot of posts about territorial issues, and I can definitly see some of that with Holly.  We don’t have any other pets, so she only picks on me. I wonder what she will be like when she is spayed.  I’m going to try to litter train her.  Which vet is better to go to an ORCA or just a vet?

The main thing regarding a vet is whether or not they are rabbit-savvy.  An ORCA vet may be more likely to be so, as they’re recommended by Orlando Rabbit Care and Adoptions. Some questions to ask to "test" vet – How many rabbits do you see a year?  How many spays/neuters have you performed? Should the rabbit fast before surgery? (The answer to that question is NO!)

When I was looking for a vet, I was looking for someone I was comfortable with, someone fairly close by, and someone who wasn’t charging an arm and a leg.  The original vet I wanted to go to owns rabbits, but was charging $50 for the pre-neuter appointment, another $130 for bloodwork, and then the surgery would be $275.  That was a little more than I had budgeted.

My local VCA hospital recently added an exotics vet to staff, who was also recommended by the MA House Rabbit society – Warren likes him, and it cost $320 for the pre-surgery appointment, bloodwork, and surgery.

Also, from what I understand, not all vets do pre-surgery bloodwork.  I had to, since Warren was over 4 years old when I brought him in for the neuter.

Good luck, and remember spaying and neutering is very important!  My little guy went from being a sweet, playful thing to a hump-monkey overnight.  3 weeks later, he is back to his original, pre-hormonal self, complete with impeccable litter habits, and binkies like you wouldn’t believe!

Yeah, I checked a non ORCA vet and the regular vet on that site I was given.

I e-mailed the ORCA vet yesterday and they estimated around 360.  I was really impressed with their web site.  I have been talking to hubby as ways to budget. I don’t know this for sure, but we also might be leaving the Orlando area. Maybe not who knows.

I felt with the non orca vet they kept asking me do you want to schedule after every question. I almost felt rushed into it.

I’m glad you were able to contact some of the offices, and are working out how to budget for it

does anyone know about how much it would cost to spay a 1 year old rabbit in massachusetts? I plan on spaying her soon so that i can bring her inside and start litter training her.

Hi Chloe Bunny – welcome – please start a new thread for your question – this thread is from 2008 and piggybacking on other threads causes confusion for members.

As for price – it varies – best thing is to get on the phone in your area and just ask.

I am going to lock this thread.
