Hi my name is Katie, and I'm new here and as a bunny owner all together. I got my bunny in July of this year so I've had her about 3 1/2 months now. She is a satin breed, white with black spots, resembling that of a cow, which is why I named her Cowie. I adopted her from a shelter, they told me she was around a year old. I don't know if anyone else has a rabbit that likes to be held, but this one does not.... absolutely not, I learned that the hard way. She has become much tamer since I first got her, but I think she's still kind of getting used to us. She can be a pain in the butt at times, but she's cute and lovable. She's starting to come around and just hang out on the couch with us, as long as your petting her, she's happy. Anyway I just wanted to say hi to everyone here and introduce my reason for joining this forum.

 

 

Hi kaite! cowie looks very cute- i can see why you would want to pick her up. Some bunnies just don't like it- the same way some cats don't like to. if she's coming up to you on the couch that's a good sign, maybe in a little while she'll let you hold her.

Hey Katie,  Cowie is beautiful and I think you gave her the perfect name.  My bun doesn't really like to be picked up once he's out and about but I pick him up out of his cage every morning and we have a good cuddle to start the day.

welcome Katie! Cowie is precious :-) I think bunnies are kinda like people - some are just fine with being picked up, but some absolutely HATE it. Kudos to you for adopting!

Bunnies can sure be challenging, but they are just so cute.  So what are Cowie's habits that can make her a "pain in the butt" at times.  I bet they will be things we can all relate to.

My Pepper hateshateshates to be held.  I've had her 3 months and we are still working on holding and harness training.  Even with treats I've only managed to pick her up once for a moment.  She is about 6-7 lbs so when she really gets flailing she's hard to hold on to.  I have to take her to the vet tomorrow morning (she's sneezing and has a runny nose) and I know it's going to be a nightmare.

One of my buns is "ok" with being held, as long as you get him from his cage. If he's already out and about, like anitastark's rabbit, he doesn't like it! (I think because in the latter scenario, he has to be "caught" which makes him feel scared).

Sometimes it takes a while. When we first got my lop bun Floppy, I thought I didn't like her really! But my mom bonded with her instantly and so she was definitely staying the course. After about 4-5 months, Floppy and I both came to understand each other better and love each other just the way we are so now things are great! Crazy sounding, huh? Some personalities can "clash" at first between human and bunnies, but somehow it all works out.

Your bunny not liking to be held is not abnormal.  Most bunnies are not fond of it, though some do tolerate it, and even a smaller few actually love being held and snuggled.  A member here, Theresa, has a bunny that enjoys it.

Over the years, volunteering at a rabbit rescue, out of the hundreds of bunnies that I've seen, I would say, I've only seen a handful that actually fully enjoy being held.   And of course, all of us volunteers then relish in the moment of the unique bunny snuggle.

Getting a bunny to at least tolerate it does make it easier to trim nails and such, but she may never truly enjoy being held.

my buns dont like to be held either but what i tried was sit in a small area with one of them sometimes both becuase one learns from the other sometimes(i use my bathroom) and basically let her rome around. but before i put her down, i sit down (indian style) and pet her for a bit then i stop. my bunny mochi would then wander for a bit and then she will some back to sit in my lap. then i repeat the process. after about 3 times i give her a treat (at the moment plain cherrios). problem is..... this is an off and on thing. one day she is super friendly and on other days she reather explore which is why i created this system becuase at the same time it allows her to explore and when she is good and ready she can come back. ^ ^
