Dill is one of my go to herbs for my bunnies, but I only feed them the bristles. I’ve always thought the stalks might be too hard. Has any tried feeding dill stalks and is that good or a bad thing?

I feed them the stems and all! They’ll even eat super woody fennel that’s bolted. More fiber is never a bad thing for their tummies or their teeth.

I think I’m going to get Panda and Fernando some dill tomorrow, it’s on their ex-foster mom’s list of herbs they love. I’ve been offering them parsley as a treat the last couple of weeks so it’s probably time for a change.

To be very sure about it, even if the stalks are woody, we’re good to feed?

Yes, and prob good for their teeth.

I had the good fortune to find a nice package of dill with the stalks on. I’m not fond of dill myself (I dislike pickles), but Panda and Fernando enjoyed it though Panda ate the stalk end first and Fernando the leaf end.

Cianoy, woody stalks isn’t a problem but if you’re worried you can chop them up into 1/2 inch-long pieces. Rabbits need lots of fiber in their diet, both for their teeth and their tummy.

Thank you. Is this a general rule I can apply to herbs? Stems of basil, oregano, mint?

I would say any herbs that are bunny safe are safe to feed all of. I give mine stems of all the herbs I feed them.
Woody stalks are absolutely fine, most bunnies happily gnaw on twigs, so the extra chewing is not a problem.
Some bunnies might be picky (mine leave the thick stalky bits of kale) but that’s just personal preference rather than something they SHOULDN’T eat.

The stalkier the better. Still tastes and smells wonderful, but added benefit of fiber and tooth usage.

Thanks. And all this time I’ve been so careful to pick only the leaves.

Interesting bit. I finally gave woody stalks. She ate the bristles and left the hard stalk. 🙂
