We have 2 mini lops. Brother and sister. He is huge (1.5kg) and she is half his size (750g) and struggles to gain weight. I am a bit worried about her over the winter as this will be her first winter outside.

Is there anyway we can help her gain weight. She is fed twice a day at the same time as her brother and as he is a quick eater we give her extra food later in the evening too but even with this her weight is low.

I must add she is a very happy bunny and seems healthy I just worry she is going to be really cold this winter.

        Thanks for any advice.

After one of my rabbits passed away, his brother lost a lot of weight. I just increased the hay and offered it in more interesting ways (with diluted apple juice sprayed on top, dried herbs mixed in, stuffed in toys etc) and gave a small amount of oats every so often as they’re quite fattening for buns.

I think a vet visit is the first order of business to rule out a dental issue or some other problem.

Has she lost weight, or has she always been small?

Also, I know you didn’t ask for this type of advice, but is there any way you can bring your rabbits inside? There are many reasons why rabbits do better when kept inside, one of which is that it’s easier to monitor their health.

Has she always been small/er? Has a vet confirmed that she’s underweight? I’m not questioning your judgement, it’s just I thought my Peanut was underweight as compared to his sister (Buttercup) he was much much smaller. I decided to go for regular weigh-ins and he is actually perfect weight and has good muscle mass. Buttercup was okay but at the most recent weigh in, she’s a little over. Just something to think about

I wonder if alfalfa hay would be a good idea. Alfalfa is usually only recommended for very young and for pregnant or lactating does but it might help bulk her up a little. What’s her current diet?
