So, after she experienced odd behavior/lrthargy and what appeared to be turning into mild head tilt, we took Ms. Rabbit to the vet yesterday. Based on her cataracts and reduced reflexes, he diagnosed her with E. Cuniculi. She’s now on a 20 day Panacur treatment.

They expect her to recover fairly quickly and regain most of her balance/leg strength within 1-2 weeks, but until then she’ll need a lot of help. She’s not accepting food right now, so I’ve been starting to give her critical care, which she takes well. She can’t really hop today, since she falls over when she tries to stand up. So, I’ve tried to keep everything she needs within reach. Does anyone have any tips for helping her be more comfortable?

I hope Ms. Rabbit recovers well . That’s good that they were able to identify the problem. BB member “vanessa” would have a bunch of advice if you want to pm her. I know that she uses a pillow to help prop her bun Lancelot up so that he can reach his head down and up from the food/water dishes easier. Also, keep an eye on her bum to make sure it stays clean in case she has trouble reaching it.

I’m glad she’s getting treatment! 20 days is a bit short though, compared to what we’re used to seeing here. 28 days or even 6 weeks is more common. The website Disabled rabbits has tips for disabled bunnies – they can be useful for temporarily disabled bunnies as well as the permanently disabled. http://www.disabledrabbits.com/ By all means PM our esteemed member Vanessa. She has a long thread going about her e c bun lancelot: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/146775/Default.aspx

Some buns experience vertigo and nausea with e cuniculi. An anti-emetic like metoclopramide can be useful in reducing nausea (rabbits can’t vomit but they can still be nauseous and refuse to eat because of that). Some vets like to treat with Baytril as well as Panacur and Metacam for inflammation-reduction and pain management.

Thanks for the help – I found that propping her up with towels and sticking a soft towel under her has helped her keep her balance. I’m happy to report that as of today, she has gotten her feistiness back, and she has started hopping (clumsily) on her own again. Her head is also no longer tilted.

She is on metacam also, 0.5 ml twice a day. She’s also on timolol maleate eye drops for her eye issues.

She’s starting to eat again also, but I’m still giving her critical care and water 3-4 times daily. I’ve noticed that she is only making very tiny poops and not much pee. Is this normal for e. cuniculi recovery?

I’m so sorry Mike, I saw your beautiful thread in the Rainbow section.

FluffyBunny, the tiny poop is probably because she hasn’t eaten much. Hopefully her eating again now will fix that. CC is obviously not hay, so she’s been missing out on the bulk that hay mostly is, and that diminishes amount and size of poop. When a bun isn’t eating hay and pellets, it drinks less and thus pees less.

EC can affect the kidneys of some buns. So keep an eye on output and color/consistency etc.

Thanks Bam, and sorry to hear about your sweet bunny longhairedmike.

She is still making tiny poops but they are at least in larger quantities now. She’s also peed 3 times at least in the last day, so that whole system is working.

She’s eating and drinking on her own some more now, and she was hopping all over almost normally last night – but today I noticed she’s a bit tilted again, and her back right leg keeps sliding when she tried standing straight. I assume a few good days/bad days are normal for EC recovery? She’s still considerably better than she was Thursday/Friday.

Ups and downs are very common with ec. Good days and bad days. I’m glad to hear she’s eating more, nutrition is so very important and appetite is of course important for quality of life. It probably means she’s feeling somewhat less nauseous.

Small update on Ms. Rabbit – she is almost back to normal now. She has almost her full appetite back, and she’s been running around the room pretty normally. She does still fall over when she’s sleeping, so we’ve been propping her up with pillows. She appreciates that and will lay on them on her own now.

She’s still getting her strength back a bit, and her poop is still very tiny, but she’s actually managing to groom herself and keep herself dry pretty well now. I’m thinking she’s just not getting enough fiber, so I will get her some different hay (maybe alfalfa for the extra calories) to see if that helps.

Lovely news! The small poop is most likely due to too little fiber, so enticing her to eat more hay will probably help lots. My Bam’s fave hay is oat.

So, the poor girl’s newest problem is that she flops/just falls on her side when she’s sleepy, then gets stuck that way. Her back legs are a little too weak to get back under her again. We’ve found her squirming on her side, slightly dehydrated and very frustrated three times today. Any ideas of how to keep this from happening?

Hi FluffyBunny! My dwarf hotot Rocky BunBun is having this head tile issue as well. I noticed it Thursday evening 9/21/17 and took him to his vet the first thing next morning. I didn’t actually notice the head tilt until the 22nd while waiting with him in the vet waiting room – I just took him in originally to find out why he was accidentally flipping over! The vet put him on Fenbendazole – .27 ml every 24 hours for 30 days to treat a presumptive EC infection; 4 weeks of Baytril – .25 ml twice a day; meclizine 12.5 mg tabs twice a day for vertigo, lubricating eye drops every 8 to 12 hours, and Critical care. This is so so tough, but I have a feeling it’s harder on ME seeing him like this than it is for him.

I’ve been giving him the meclizine crushed up in applesauce or apple butter, and he loves the baytril (I had them make it peanut butter flavored), he doesn’t really fight me on the Fenbendazole but the critical care is the worst. He also is okay with my syringe feeding him a little water from time to time. Last night & this morning I finally noticed some tiny poops, so I’m grateful that GI Stasis isn’t happening right now. I placed an order on Amazon Prime for the apple/banana flavor critical care – same day delivery… So hopefully that will be more palatable for him. And thanks to bam for the reminder of oat day – BunBun always loved it, but it made him overproduce cecotropes- but that’s not a concern at the moment.

I can tell he’s still alert, which gives me hope, but I’ve never dealt with anything like this before so it’s heartbreaking and I’m so grateful for this forum.

I have to go back to work tomorrow, and if I feed him critical care at 7 AM and then not again until about 10 hours later, do you guys think that will be horrible? The vet recommended up to 17 mld every 6 hours if he’s not eating on his own, and since Thursday afternoon (2 1/2 days ago) I haven’t been able to get him to eat anything on his own…

Sorry to hear you have to deal with this too JRBunbun – it’s tough to see bunnies you’ve had for so long get this kind of problem, especially when they’re still mentally “there” and you can tell they’re frustrated. When she was young, Ms. Rabbit was such a little daredevil bunny…it’s a bit sad to see her getting elderly and now having this sort of issue, and knowing a lot of the weakness etc could be permanent. Also, I totally relate to how you got the diagnosis. When I took Ms. Rabbit in initially, I thought the odd behavior was because she was in pain from her corneal ulcers. Nope – turns out her ulcers are in comparatively good shape, but they were also a manifestation of the EC that had started attacking her nervous system.

Try mixing the critical care with some well mashed banana. I’m not force feeding Ms. Rabbit anymore, but when I was, that made her take it much more willingly. Do you think you might be able to get anyone else to give the critical care for you? I had the same issue – between work and school I am often not home for 15+ hour stretches, so I had my dad do the force feedings. If not, I would just leave a small bowl of water and some mixed up critical care in reach of him.

Thanks, Fluffy! It’s funny – I actually went to the grocery store and picked up some organic baby food banana – I included that in his most recent feeding and he ate it. Still reluctantly – but he did eat it. I checked the ingredients before purchasing and it’s just banana and a little added vitamin c. I think my first several feedings I had made the critical care too thick. I’m getting the hang of it now…

My boyfriend will feed him tomorrow – it will probably be a little under 8 hours between feedings, but it will have to do. The rest of the week I should be able to work from home – I am very fortunate that I’m able to do that, and I have an extremely compassionate boss who I know will not have an issue with it. I’m just hoping that he’ll regain his desire to eat on his own soon. I did buy some oat hay and also some alfalfa… Some fresh raspberries, some organic pumpkin puree… and some figs (the figs are for me, not for Bun – I know he can’t have those). I also have a fresh pineapple waiting in the fridge for when he is ready to eat on his own again, it’s his favorite. Oh, and some dill.

Did it take Ms. Rabbit a whole week before she started eating on her own again? I was looking at the dates of your posts and that’s what it seems like, so I’m curious to know if that is right…

It only took her about 3 days after she started treatment. She wasn’t eating at all Wednesday night, then wasn’t eating all day Thursday (which is when she started the Panacur). I force fed her Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I switched to feeding her just twice a day Sunday, then stopped Monday night. She started eating Saturday night and then was eating veggies/treats/some pellets by Sunday night. She wasn’t eating hay until about the following Wednesday.

Keep trying the good smelling herbs and treats! What got her eating was a tiny piece of whole wheat bread. After a few bits of that, I was able to entice her to eat small handfuls of cilantro if I held them under her mouth. Once she could walk a bit again, that was the first thing she’d seek out to eat too.

Thank you so much for your reply! It gives me hope. Rocky hasn’t stopped hopping, but he does roll a bit, and favors heading to the left (his head is tilted with the left eye down) but he is able to get back up on his own after he rolls. I can tell by the look in his eye that he is surprised and confused by his inability to stay upright all the time. His eye rolling has slowed down considerably, and he’s only had 3 doses of the Panacur. He is also on Baytril… So many medicines!

He doesn’t have interest in food yet, but your mention of whole wheat bread gives me an idea – he would go nuts for a nibble of Ritz cracker. I might have to buy a box and see if I could tempt him with that. (My boyfriend was eating them with soup and dropped crumbs and Rocky BunBun came over and hovered them up. He wouldn’t stop begging for them)! I am so strict about his diet, I don’t even really give treats! Just once in a while and only the timothy-hay based ones… I should get him some freeze-dried strawberries – he loves those. (And they are really great in pancakes, haha)! This little monkey has me wrapped around his little finger. He is a rescue, he survived for a few weeks out in the wild after someone dumped him out on Long Island about 8 or 9 years ago… That’s why I named him Rocky…

                                        How’s Rocky doing today, JRbunbun?

Ms. Rabbit’s been doing pretty poorly today. This morning, she wasn’t eating on her own, and she couldn’t hop without falling over and getting stuck. She’s eating and pooping and peeing now, and hopping some, but she’s still obviously having trouble with her balance and her right back leg – she still falls over and gets stuck often. I called the vet and they told me she may have developed a secondary ear infection, and may need to go on an antibiotic if she’s still falling over tomorrow.

Goodness. Sending many vibes for {{{{Ms Rabbit}}} and {{{Rocky}}}.

FB, I wonder if Meclizine would benefit Ms Rabbit also? It may curb some dizziness if she is feeling any.

If you’re away from the buns for a length of time, it can help to leave piles of wet greens near them in several spots. Some grass too if you can find some untreated. Wash it well. Having things like that they can reach the head forward and pull into their mouth might help and keeps them somewhat hydrated also.

Hi Fluffy! I hope Ms. Rabbit is feeling better today. Yesterday when I got home from work, my boyfriend had tried to syringe feed Rocky but he wouldn’t take it… I think bf is just afraid of being too aggressive… So I went out on a limb and washed some fresh dill and offered it to him. And he ate it. I was shocked.

He’s eaten dill, red leaf lettuce, parsley, but wasn’t interested in the chicory I gave him. He really can’t hop at all, I tried letting him out today on a carpet and petted him, and he tried to move a bit but just rolled over. He IS able to right himself though. I have beach towels along the inner edges of his cage, and they are acting as bumpers so I think he likes that and it helps him right himself. He is so far tilted to the left that his head just rests on the ground. But he has enough strength that he’ll swing his head back and to the left, and use it to propel himself to turn to the right. I’ve been massaging his neck, which he seems to like a lot, and flexing and bending his back legs a bit too – he really won’t let me do much manipulation on his front legs – so I don’t try as I don’t want to stress him out… He’s also been molting for weeks, so that makes this even more of a struggle for me. I have been using puppy wee-wee pads on the bottom of his cage, and as soon as he goes once I clean it up and put down a new one… I gave him some critical care this morning – the banana apple flavor, and made it with babyhood banana and water, but he still hates it… I will give him a little more tonight too. He is pooping a small amount, but he’s not eating much… I’m glad to see that any poop at all is coming out, honestly – to me that means he’s at least not clogged up… And I have been rubbing his tummy the way I have in the past when I’ve suspected stasis.

It’s still so early that I guess I can’t really tell if he’s getting better or not, but I do think that the appetite is a good thing… I’ve been syringe feeding him water because I’m afraid to put a bowl in with him for fear he’ll drown – is that a stupid thing to think? He also has a water bottle – he would use both when he’s healthy – I would always leave them both full for fear that he’d tip over the bowl and get thirsty.. lol but I’m afraid that with his head tilt so severe he won’t be able to hold his head in one spot long enough to actually get any water… I suppose I’ll give it a try and see. I have to second Jersey’s recommendation on the Meclizine. Rocky is getting 12.5 mg every 8 to 12 hours and I’m fairly sure that it helps a lot. I also haven’t noticed his eyes darting around as much today…

Hang in there, we can get through this! As long as Rocky keeps fighting I’m going to help him out. I think it’s just going to take some more time before I can be certain either way.

                                            XOXO

Funny about the dill. I had heard it is good for buns that have gassy tums. It’s something Ive seen one of mine eat when they were off their food too, and its not something they were familiar with beforehand. Maybe they know it could have some benefits?

I do recall other BB members in the past had thought meclizine was the thing that made a difference for their rabbit that had head tilt. I think it’s one of those things that may work for some and not others.
It wasn’t readily available here when Maple had head tilt. I would probably had to orfer it from NZ. But I see it is around a bit more now. I used a bit of Benadyrl (Diphenhydramine) for her as it can have the same benefits. I honestly cannot recall if it helped or not though.

Awe man, I’m having a tough time. Rocky is still able to sit with his bottom on the ground, but his head is mostly resting on the ground. I think his strength is building up a bit, because I see him trying to hold it up to the side sometimes – and even swing himself around when he want to get to some greens. He’s eating greens, and I’m still giving him critical care because he doesn’t want hay or pellets. Rocky has never been the most affectionate bun, he’s always been very spunky, tough and always had a lot of attitude. Seeing him like this is really breaking my heart. Today is only his 6th day of treatment, so I guess I should just be patient and keep being positive. I was working from home today and about to feed him some critical care, when I had to run to the computer to answer a call. He peed on me, the poor guy. He’s never done that before. I don’t know if it was an accident, if he was irritated that I picked him up only to sit down, or if he was marking me lol. Oh, well. I am clearly overthinking everything. I guess it’s just going to take a lot of patience from me and a lot of rest for him. He’s usually free-roam, so seeing him so inactive for such long periods of time is very uncomfortable for me. I’m trying not to poke or prod him when I don’t need to, but it’s so hard to not just go in there and stare at him.

Fluffy – how are you doing? How is Ms. Rabbit these past couple of days? Did you end up getting her an antibiotic or some meclizine? ((Hugs))

Sorry for not updating! She is doing pretty well. I ended up not needing to get her meizine, since her appetite has returned and she seems to not have as much issue with the dizziness. Her main issue now is that she has significant weakness in her back right leg, which seems worse some days than others. She hops with a bad limp, and when she falls on that side she has great difficulty getting back up. I’ve been massaging her leg and doing light exercise with it to see if that helps, but I’m thinking it might be something that she will just have to recover from slowly, like the head tilt. I would appreciate any suggestions for things I could do to help her with this, if anyone has dealt with one-sided leg weakness.

                                                  How’s Rocky doing now?

Maybe some people on Disabled rabbits FB group would have some suggestions? Some PT exercises you could try with her? Do you think it could be age related also?

I see you’ve already employed the rolled up towels. I think BB member, Vanessa, who was dealing with Lancelot’s hind end weakness for a long time did things like that and he liked a soft toy he would lie on or prop up against.

Im sure Mr Bunny is helping her out too. <3
Really glad to read about the improvements Ms Rabbit has made.

Please send good thoughts for Ms. Rabbit. They think she may be in organ failure. She was severely hypothermic and unresponsive. They are keeping her in oxygen and a warm incubator for an hour to see if she improves.

FB, I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I hope you don’t mind my reply, but I’m going through a lot of things you guys have been dealing with as well.

JRBunBun, Marley is on all of the same meds as your Rocky. He is currently taking .5 ml of Panacur once daily for 30 days, one Baytril tablet twice daily for two weeks, 1ml of Metacam once daily, and today we started Meclizine for the first time in hopes that it’ll help his balance. He started off being treated for an ear infection, and after a month of being treated with Albon, we’re now treating for EC. Part of me feels like this is what we should’ve been doing a month ago, but I’m not a vet and vets around here aren’t very familiar with rabbits, so it’s so tough to know what the right thing is for him.

Marley is also tilting his head so much that he rests his head on the floor sometimes. He started rolling Friday night and he’s spent a lot of time on his side since. He has been experiencing nystagmus as well, but it does seem like since we started the Panacur and Baytril on Friday, it has gotten a little better. I have him in a laundry basket at the moment, with towels draped over the sides (to keep his little paws from getting caught in the holes) as well as a pet bed in the bottom that I put in a garbage bag and wrapped in a towel. The bed gives him bumpers, so to speak, but he’s still spent so much time on his side since I put him in the hamper. He started this while in a carrier (with mesh sides,) but I thought the hamper might be better and provide a little more room for him to move around when he chooses to. I opened the front of the carrier for him to come out Sunday night, and he would just fall over when he tried to come out. I felt so terrible for him.

JRBunBun, how much does Rocky weigh? I have 25mg tablets of Dramamine (Meclizine) and am thinking about giving him half a tablet twice a day. Marley weighs about 5 pounds. Does this sound good? I just gave him his first half of a tablet a few hours ago.

Marley went through stasis earlier this year, and he peed on me while syringe feeding as well. It broke my heart because he’d never done that before, so I knew I was stressing him out significantly. At the time he was terrified of the syringe. He’s also usually hopping around the house, so having him in this laundry basket is depressing me, possibly more so than it is him. Thankfully he is still eating vegetables, but he hasn’t been eating pellets because I’m not quite sure how to get him to eat them. I don’t want a bowl in with him because of the rolling episodes. I know he’s not getting enough hay or pellets, but he’s doing well with vegetables. His appetite is there, and there are little poops, so I know that’s a good sign. Should I still consider a syringe or two of critical care to make up for the absence of hay and pellets? I have some left from when he had stasis, so I could give it a try if necessary, but I’m not sure if I should or not.

I’m really sorry to see that others are going through this as well, it’s so hard to see such sweet, loving animals going through such a scary experience. FB, again, I am terribly sorry for your loss. I will be thinking of you and hoping you find the strength needed to get through this hard time.

Oh FB, I’m so sorry about Ms. Rabbit. You did everything you could, and I’m sure she knew that. These animals are incredibly loving and smart, and good for you for giving her the best care possible. I’ll be sending positive thoughts and prayers your way.

Alcyone, Rocky weighs about 3 pounds – but I am sure he’s lost some weight since getting sick. He is on .27 ml of 100mg/ml Panacur once a day and .25 ml of 54mg/ml baytril twice a day. The meclazine I got from the vet is 12.5mg tablets, and they said 1 tablet every 8 to 12 hours as needed – I started out giving him a whole pill every 8 hours or so, but now I give him half a tablet twice a day – and the vet also gave me ‘LiquiTears’ – which are ‘Akwa Tears Lublicant Eye Drops’ – and I give him a drop in each eye every 8 to 12 hours. His first dose of everything was 9/22 and he is improving but his appetite is still not good. I catch him munching hay once in a while and he is only mildly interested in greens. Yesterday I started giving him a small amount of water with the powdered Pedialite dissolved in it – which I think is somewhat controversial, but it is what it is. I emailed his vet yesterday and asked about the critical care – I was curious to know if I should stop to see if he gets hungry – and she said to try it… But by about 6 or 7 PM last night I was too nervous to not give him any, so I gave him probably about 10 ml… which is a fairly small amount… He has been gravitating to his favorite place in my apartment, which I guess is a good thing – and he hasn’t been falling over – but his balance is still horrible due to the tilt. I gave him another 10 lm of critical care this morning as well.

Marley’s balance is still virtually non existent. He’s currently eating pellets while on his side as I type this. I’m just glad he’s eating them, his appetite hasn’t gone anywhere so far so thank goodness for that. I hope Rocky’s appetite comes back soon!
My vet didn’t give me anything for eyes, but Marley keeps his “down eye” closed all the time, and the other one is wide open. Does Rocky do this as well? Marley is tilting to his right, my left when looked at him head on. I can’t believe how much time he is spending on his side, it’s really concerning me. He wants to get up when I give him food but he seems just as content laying there, if that makes any sense. He can’t really get his feet underneath him

I gave it to Rocky for about a week, then weaned him off of it when I noticed his eyes weren’t rolling around anymore. Rocky still doesn’t have too much of an appetite, but it’s improving. He’s able to hop into and our of his letterbox again without too much trouble. His head is still tilted of course, but it’s only been about 2 weeks of treatment, so I’m hopeful that he can beat it. How is your bun doing?
