Hi! I will be picking up my new Holland Lop on Tuesday, I am so excited. My family fell in love with two rabbits when we first went to visit the breeder (there are no bunny rescues in my area). We know that we will be getting a gorgeous black Holland Lop and there is a large possibility that we will be getting another lovely spotted bunny. They are both males/bucks and are about 11 weeks old. I do know that they will need to be neutered as soon as possible, but I don’t think they are old enough yet. Will they be fine living together until they can be neutered or should they be kept separately? Also how do you know when your rabbit should be neutered? Should I listen to the suggestion of 3 1/2 months or is this incorrect?

They will not be fine living together. If one or both start to become hormonal, its very likely they will fight. Rabbits who have fought are unlikely to bond in the future, unless they forget their grudge. Its better to be safe than sorry and house them apart (but in the same room) until two months after they are both neutered.

A male bun can be neutered as soon as you see his testicles

I agree. A lot depends on the vet also. Some don’t want to do it until they are 6 months old but many experienced vets will do neuters younger then that.

When you get the new rabbits, I suggest taking them to the vet for a health check and you can discuss when to neuter then. The vet can also check the gender of the rabbits. Sometimes breeders get it wrong. Having said that, we’ve had members report on here of the vet getting it wrong too!

Keep them apart til after they’ve been neutered. They’re probably a bit young at the moment for hormones to be a problem but some develop early and it’s best to separate them rather than discover they’ve fought one morning!

Definitely discuss with your vet about when to neuter. Mine was neutered at 4 months but some prefer to wait
