So Ms. Rabbit got diagnosed with arthritis and high eye pressure/early glaucoma several weeks ago. She has been blind due to cataracts for 2 1/2 years. After having her eyes rechecked, we discovered she had developed very large ulcers in both eyes. She was placed on gentomycin eye drops 3x a day, and the ulcers immediately receded and she got her feistiness back. The ulcer in her right eye is still partially present, and it is being stubborn about going away. She ran out of her eye drops after being on them for a couple weeks, and it took me 2 days to get her a new prescription.

Yesterday, I found that her right eye was extremely “goopy” and stuck shut. Now, she has been extremely lethargic, hesitant to eat food, and tilting her head to the side of the eye. She is also sitting in a very peculiar way – she has her front legs extended one way and her hind legs stretched the other, with her belly against the floor and her head tilted to the right.

Does anybody have experience with this type of issue? I’m obviously very worried about her odd behavior, and the strange position etc. actually being from some stroke/head tilt/etc. Also, has anyone dealt with a stubborn corneal ulcer that won’t fully heal? The vet is starting to discuss eye removal, but considering her age (7 years) and the cost of the procedure, I’d like to see if there are any other options.

          Hi FB
Im sorry to hear about Ms Rabbit. Sending many {{{vibes}}} her way.

Did any of the eye meds contain analgesics? Topical steriods are often chosen and act as anti-inflammatory/analgesics. They don’t have same risk as other steroidal meds.

          Was there any xrays done?

She sounds as if she’s having some neurological issues so I’d wonder if the problem is not just contained to the eyes.

BB had a thread about how she managed Vivian glaucoma and ulcers. Ill link it here when I find it. She had trouble getting the ulcers to completely clear and in the end they used animal contact lens over the eye to keep it moist and it healed up.

Here’s the thread about Vivian. I’ve linked it to the 2nd page which has the part about using the lens in blue font.
