        Hi guys.

I’m really worried. Mile eats his hay but far less than Bella these days. He peed 4 times today, and pooped out 17 poops and not big ones, some were small and others medium. He had 1 deformed poop also. Bella is a fast eater & he cut on eating a bit than usual. Maybe he doesn’t like the taste of meadow hay anymore.-He eats solid but not too much, drinks water, eats his pellets and cecals (2 tbsp. a day and two cups of veggies a day), does a lot of binkies and fast happy running around the table. I just don’t seem to get what’s wrong? He is in his shedding season and i brush him regularly. I did notice some string-like poo but like 2 of them and it’s not even in the same day.
I gave him belly massages daily and one time while doing it i felt a gas bubble just “wouuuuh” rush through his intestines. Gave him some apple but that didn’t do much. What to do in this situation?

If he has gas issues, did you try simethicone? And have you offered him other types of hay if they’re available?

Simethicone is helpful for gas. Whatever you can do to encourage more hay eating (presenter more fresh or a preferred type of hay more frequently), in addition to more hydration (syringe feed water, wet veggies) will help both gas and fur move along. It sounds like something is blocking him up, so definitely do what you can do encourage that hay appetite.

I give him only meadow hay since he prefers it better than timothy. Maybe i can put some orchard grass in there or some oat hay? I heard oat hay is like a treat for them so should i just put some hay to make his appetite better? I only gave him simethicone when we were at the vet. He gave me some of that medicine for Mile in syringes. Oh i just have one question here while i’m at it, when i don’t have Critical Care on hand, what is another substitute for it? I heard you can put some pellets and some mashed banana but i forgot about how you prepare the pellets. Oh i almost forgot – how much cc/ml of the gas drops shall i give him?

It’s pretty much impossible overdose a rabbit on simethicone. I believe the standard is 1ml (that’s what I give Wick; the syringe I have has a 0.3 and 0.6 line, so I just fill the entire syringe for 1.0), and you can repeat every 3-4 hours. After the first few though, if you see no improvement, you can stop.

Oat hay, for Wick, is a treat because he loves the seeds and only eats the seeds, haha. In terms of treat as in sugar treat, you shouldn’t classify oat hay as such— oat hay is a fine substitute for hay. I only caution doing constant oat hay because with Wick, he becomes selective and begins to only eat seeds, not hay.

                For alternative to CC… unsure.

Apple wouldn’t help. He needs plenty of hay so definitely try different types to see if he finds one particularly irresistible. Water is also crucial so very wet veggies.

You can make a pellet mash, mix pellets with a little water. You can add some mashed banana or something to entice him.

I gave him 3 doses yesterday, but today just one cause i don’t think he has gas. His belly felt normal, not too hard or too soft, no loud gurgling sounds when i was massaging, haven’t noticed any hunched up positions and such. I think he just ingested too much fur and it’s going out slowly. He had one stringy poop, it wasn’t in a string at all, but on the top of the poop there was fur. I also bought a new type of hay from him, orchard grass and he loves it. I tried the vitapol brand i think it’s called and it’s fragrant, reminds me of dried chamomile a bit and it’s in nice green long strands. Should i keep on with the simethicone or not? I’ll go now and give him wet veggies alongside syring water into his mouth.

You can stop the simethicone since it doesn’t seem to be helping! It’s great you found that orchard hay is enjoyable! A lot of rabbits like it because it’s soft and leafy.

Also, a side note that’s a bit gross and unsure if this happens to people, but in my time with Wick so far, there have been two times where I picked him up and noticed a poop was stuck on him bum. I grab a tissue and gently pull it off, just to realize it’s a string of pearl poo that was still partially in him because the poo exited but the fur string didn’t entirely leave his hole…. Wick seemed to tolerate both times when I’d gently pull it out without realizing it was still kind of in him.

I don’t think this happens commonly at all, but once he does start passing string of pearl poos, which hopefully he will, or other poos with some fur, keep in mind it could get messy down potentially.

I really do hope he starts getting rid of the fur. It’s seems he has an obstruction? The wet vegetables and water helped him a lot, he is already pooping more but i noticed only two poop strings so far. Last night after my update he seemed like he couldn’t find a comfortable position and got up 2-3 times before laying down nicely. I assumed it was gas? But i didn’t gave him anything, i just got him more of that orchard grass and he later on hopped back to his hidey house. Could the uncomfortable positions be a sign of gas again? I feel like he gets gas, and eventually stops then comes back in a matter of time. The last time i gave him something that could induce gas were a few broccoli leaves and that was about 11 days ago. I gave him the broccoli leaves for just 2 days (with other types of veggies of course). I only gave him the leaves because i know the head and the stalk can give him gas. When it’s shedding time, he often gets those stringy poops. He has lion head in his blood so he has really long fur on the cheeks, ears etc., i never really tried trimming his fur but i’ll probably ask my vet. What are some symptoms when a bunny has a fur blockage?

It seems like this has been going on for a bit. I would recommend seeing the vet to have a formal examination. If your rabbit is showing signs of discomfort, it’s best to get him checked out. What I’ve shared is the extent of it.

He Is pooping significantaly and visibly more. That day he pooped 17 droppings throughout the day and now when i fed him wet veggies and syringed water, i put him back to his cage where he immediately pooped out 35-40 droppings which i’m really happy about. I also groomed him with a brush, he stopped shedding that much. When i carried him back to his cage, he also peed which is good. I’ll repeat this tommorow and probably go to the veterinarian just to do some x-rays to see where and how much fur is “stuck” in his intestines. I also cut up on the pellets, gave him a tsp in the morning and leaved him with just hay to eat so he had enough fibre to excrete the fur out. Was my decision ok about reducing the pellets?

Cutting some pellets is a fine decision if your rabbit is more than 7mo. And if it’s just for a small bit of time.

He’s 1 year and 1 month old and yes, i’m cutting on the pellets until he gets better. Thx!

This morning, went to his cage, his litter box (and the rest of the cage bcuz he is marking his territory and lost his habits) had a lot of nice, round and pretty decent in size droppings. But wheb cleaning his cage, he just pooped 5 poops and peed once. It’s been 5 hours and still not much poop, he has peed 1 more time though. He also wasn’t interested in fresh hay in the morning and isn’t now either. He did ate hay but 40 strands throughout this 5 hrs, maybe even less. Even though he ate, his tummy isn’t making any sounds, not even the normal gurgles which happen during digestion. I also gave him his dripping wet veggies. He ate most of it but left a few bits of salad leaves. I decided to put him on a chair and syringe water and get some simethicone into his tummy. He had no loud gurgling sounds and NO sound at all, but he was also doing the uncomfortable positions. Laying on one side with his head really upright but his feet look relaxed (i read this somewhere on the internet?). I think i should take him to the vet but my father is going to work a night shift at 7pm and my mother is at a friend’s wedding so my sister which doesn’t have a driver’s license will stay with me so there’s no way i can take Mile to a veterinary clinic if he gets really sick.

It could be a time of day. In the early morning things tend to be more active and for Wick, he doesn’t really start doing his thing again until 2PM. Keep monitoring and visit a vet when you can.
