I have never had a dog around Norman but I pet my mom’s dog all the time and he doesn’t seem to notice. She even comes to our house but doesn’t go near his cage. It has not been an issue.

But this evening I helped teach a puppy class and now that I am home Norman is scared to death. It’s the scent on my hands that seems to be doing it. He smells them, thumps and hides. I did clean up some puppy pee. Could that be it or the smell of he dogs in general? This I s discouraging as I hoped to get a dog eventually ?

It sounds like new dog scents, rather than dog scents in general, might have scared him. Buns have been known to thump at the scent of new humans as well. Since he has been “introduced” to the scent of your mom’s dog all the time, he is probably comfortable with that scent, and less comfortable with the sudden scent of a totally different dog that he has never smelled before. I don’t think it means you can’t get a dog in the future . That dog’s scent and presence will just have to be introduced slowly to Norman.

Thank you that does make sense. I pet about 14 dogs tonight. Very overwhelming for him I guess!!

It could be that all of the dogs are new to him. My Bombur is terrified of dogs, but hes comfortable around my neighbors dog and my boyfriends parents dog. All other dogs and dog smells will send him into a panic.

Your bun might get used to the new smells over time, so dont give up home about adopting a dog at some point. You would just need to introduce very, very slowly. Starting with swapping their scents and training the dog in obedience will help when the time comes
