Hi, I will be getting my new rabbit in a week and wanted to be prepared for how much hay and pellets to buy. He will be 8 weeks old. How much alfalfa should I get? Is 50lbs too much? And 25lbs of young rabbit food too much? Thank you.

I don’t know exactly how much in the way of alfalfa hay and pellets a baby rabbit of 8 weeks should eat per day, but I personally think you’ll never go wrong by erring on the side of getting too much food rather than too little. I bought 1/3 bale of mixed hay for my two buns Saturday before last, and I’m not 100% sure it’ll last to the 23rd which is when I’m planning my next supply run!

With two baby buns I went through 50 lbs of oxbow young rabbit food, so with 1 I think 25lbs should be enough even with unlimited pellets, but if you need more there’s nothing wrong with getting a bit extra, the transition from young to adult is recommended at 7 months but it doesn’t have to exactly at that, and you can use leftover pellets to make rabbit cookies.

Thank you guys so much. I’ll most likely start off with 25lbs.

That reminds me that I need to buy a fresh bag of adult rabbit food this weekend. I bought a 5-pound bag of Oxbow last month the week before Panda and Fernando came to live with me, and I think I’m down to less than 1 pound now at 1/8 cup per bun per day at the 3 1/2 week mark. At the risk of boring you all with the math  that works out to 1 cup used per 4 days, so at the 23/24-day mark that comes out to 6 cups of pellets used total; hmmmm, maybe 7-8 cups per 5-pound bag?
