I recently noticed that my bunnies, both 7 weeks old are peeing a little thick. The male bunny peed milky yellow. I looked online and it says it is due to excess calcium. I haven’t fed them hay in a few days, could this be the cause of it? Should I bring them to the vet? They seem to be fine and eating/drinking.

Bunnies are peculiar in that they eliminate excess calcium via the pee, not via the feces as most other mammals do. So when a bun gets more calcium in the diet than they need, they will pee milky and that’s normal.

Young rabbits need calcium for their growth, so it’s not a good idea to cut back on calcium for them unless you start seeing milky pee each and every day for a prolonged period of time.

Hay is really important for bunnies and pellets have a lot more calcium than grass hay, so if they’ve eaten more pellets now when they haven’t had hay, that’s probably the explanation. Can you get hay for them? They really need it for their teeth and tummies and for establishing healthy eating habits when they’re still young and malleable.

You don’t have to take them to a vet for milky pee. It is normal.

I agree with Bam. Completely normal.
